Nick Saban eyes new way to recruit Nothing gets people talking around the SEC - from football coaches to football fans - like Nick Saban and recruiting. How many other coaches have reeled in the top signing class in the nation and had their name attached to a recruiting rule in short order? The so-called Saban Rule prohibits head coaches from visiting high schools during the current ... [link]

Recruiting via webcam

[editor's note, by Todd] bumped from the diaries http://www.al.com/sports/birminghamnews/kscarbinsky.ssf?/base/sports/120911138045020.xml&coll=2& amp;thispage=1 I love Saban.  They try to keep him from spring recruiting, so he gets around the rule by talking to the players and coaches through a webcam.  This was one of very few Scarbinsky articles I actually liked. Not only is he allowed to make one call to the recruits and I suppose unlimited to coaches and everything, but video conferencing is apparently considered a phone call, and recruits are allowed to call head coaches as much as they want. So Much for the Saban Rule

He's back. It didn't take long for Nick Saban to find a way around the "Saban Rule," which prohibits head coaches from making off-campus visits during the spring evaluation period, running from April 15 to May 31. Kevin Scarbinsky of the Birmingham News details how Saban hooked up with William Ming, a hotshot defensive end recruit from Athens (Ala.) High. It started when Crimson Tide assistant Curt Cignetti visited Ming at his high school, which has a Distance Learning Lab that allows students to take online classes by using a live webcam. Writes Scarbinsky: "Cignetti left behind a web address that Ming used to log on later that day and spend 15-20 ...

... NOTE: After the recent slap-stick postings, here is a foray into fiction/parody. And it comes on the heels of the news of Nick Saban's masterful recruiting tactic - using video-conferencing to meet with recruits once the NCAA banned him from going on Spring recruiting visits. ...

Recruits know what Nick Saban is wearing
Published 5/6/2008 by Michael Rand at Randball
This story has been out there for a couple of weeks, but it caught our eye this morning as we logged six miles on the treadmill: Alabama head football coach Nick Saban, the king of recruiting loopholes, has found another one: video conferencing with athletes during what is otherwise a period in which coaches cannot visit high schools. As far as we can tell, the work of Saban — obviously pictured just a split-second before delivering the punchline to his favorite joke, “What has two index fingers and doesn’t care about ticking off other college coaches” — first was written about in the Birmingham News on April 25. Let’s have a look-see: ...

This is bowling recruiting, there are rules. And Les Miles doesn’t always care for them. In previous years, head coaches could contact recruits from December through NSD in February, then there was a dead period, then contact could resume in May. Recent changes in policy at the NCAA (read: paper tiger) prevent head coaches from contacting recruits in the month of May, but still allow ...
