The reality behind the “sport” of bull-riding, are the tight flank straps, the metal spurs and electric prods that inflict anger and pain on the bulls to provoke the bucking necessary for scoring. Our society is moving towards a more humane world. In light of the fact that Massachusetts has spoken and acted against the abuse of animals in “sport” by outlawing greyhound racing and recently tightened restrictions against animal fighting, I am disappointed by the Red Sox latest investment. This choice for partnership is ill conceived; they stand to lose a larger market share of enlightened animal-caring people than they will gain in cowboy country. Considering our country is taking a huge step forward by swearing in our first African American President, it is somewhat ironic that FSG is supporting this archaic form of legalized animal torture.
