Bob Sheppard Retires
Sliding Into Home: A Yankees Blog —
Bob Sheppard has officially called it a career. The 99-year-old "Voice of Yankee Stadium" had this to say to Bryan Hoch: "I have no plans of coming back," Sheppard said on Wednesday in a telephone interview. "Time has passed me by, I think. I had a good run for it. I enjoyed doing what I did. I don't think, at my age, I'm going to suddenly regain the stamina that is really needed if you do the job and do it well." ... "I haven't been well," Sheppard said. "I had problems breathing for a while, and then I had a loss of weight. Now I'm trying to build myself back up again to get back to the stamina that I had when I played football at St. John's [University] many, many, ...
Sheppard hangs up the mike
Scott Proctor's Arm - A New York Yankees Blog —
Legendary voice of Yankee Stadium Bob Sheppard told Bryan Hoch today that he plans on retiring. Sheppard, 99, hasn’t called a game since 2007. "I have no plans of coming back," Sheppard said on Wednesday in a telephone interview. "Time has passed me by, I think. I had a good run for it. I enjoyed doing what I did. I don't think, at my age, I'm going to suddenly regain the stamina that is really needed if you do the job and do it well." The entire article is worth a read. He has words of praise for current public address announcer Paul Olden. Sheppard also said he doubts he’ll ...
The Voice of the Yankees retires
Circling The Bases —
[image] Bob Sheppard hasn't announced games at Yankee Stadium since 2007, but he had not made his retirement official until today : Bob Sheppard served more than 50 seasons as the "Voice of Yankee Stadium," his clear, concise and correct style proudly providing the soundtracks of summer for Yankees players from Joe DiMaggio to Derek Jeter. One month after celebrating his 99th birthday by watching the Yankees inch closer to their 27th World Series championship -- the first Fall Classic he missed in the Bronx since 1951 -- Sheppard has decided it is time to officially step down as the club's public address announcer. "I have no plans of coming back," Sheppard said on Wednesday in a telephone ...

Thanks to Reader Mike F. for sending this along (see the links at right to check out Mike’s “The Baseline” blog).
Mike states that he was there for Sheppard’s final game. Hopefully he can send the date. I’d like to compare the teams and lineups from 1951 to the finale.
The news…Bob Sheppard, who was the PA announcer from 4/17/51 until 2008 (I think he made a few in 2008, but it could have been 2007), has made it official. After missing all of 2009 due to illness, the 99-year-old(!) Sheppard is calling it a career….
I was there on Bob Sheppard day,
when this plaque was dedicated.

Bob Sheppard Officially Retires

Brian Hoch of MLB.com has the story, the voice of the Yankees (aka ‘Voice of God’) has officially called it a career. He writes:
