The A's finally designated a player for assignment yesterday. Unfortunately it was not this blog's favorite DFA target Emil Brown, but A's utility player Donnie Murphy. Murphy has shown some potential in the past, hitting .326/.385/.509 in AAA last year in 175 AB. Most of that was driven though by an obscenely high .422 BABIP, and he was due for some serious regression at any level. He would get it at the major leagues, where he hit .188/.278/.307 this year in 115 PA. While not a large sample of PA, a sub .600 OPS is just terrible, even for a utility infielder. Since he didn't bring anything spectacular on defense he was DFA'ed ...
