Somebody's Gonna Be Wrong

... This may be partially caused by different opinions on their defense- they are good, it's just a question of how good. But I think it's mostly their top 3 starters. Burnett can opt out of his deal at the end of the year (thanks, Keith). PECOTA has him throwing 185 innings with a 3.83 ERA; it's worth noting that in his last contract year he threw 209 innings with a 3.44 ERA in 2005, his last contract year. That's certainly too optimistic of an expectation, but it's been shown that players perform better in contract years, and I don't believe PECOTA takes ...

The Big Lead: An Interview with ESPN.com Baseball Writer Keith Law

The Big Lead: An Interview with ESPN.com Baseball Writer Keith Law Thanks to Zitoast , for pointing this out… Q: We want a few sleepers from you: A team that will reach the postseason that won fewer than 80 games last year, a Cy Young candidate in each league who won fewer than 10 games last year, and a budding star who nobody’s really paying attention to right now, but could be a household name come September. Most likely team to go from ...

... LAW OF THE LAND: The blog The Big Lead has an interesting interview with ESPN's Keith Law, who says, among other things, that the Blue Jays -- for whom he was working when the deal was completed -- negotiated a terrible contract with A.J. Burnett ("a two-year player option, and I don’t see why any club would ever give a player an option like that . . . [you're] ceding your upside to the player and locking in your downside") and that baseball's real fans don't care about performance-enhancing drugs. ("The fans who are most up in arms over PED usage are ...

... - Jeff Conine is up to some interesting things post baseball. - Keith Law is fairly high on the Reds. - This may have already been linked somewhere on Red Reporter, but Jonah Keri recently took an interesting look at the 1990 Reds as a failed dynasty. I really hadn't ever thought about how young that team was, it is kind of surprising how far they fell in '91. Lot of career years in 1990. - And finally, Bill James took questions over at Freakanomics. Good, pretty much as always. ...

Getting to Know: The Chicago White Sox

... people in those old Duracell commercials. All the talk I ever heard about Floyd was that is horrible K/BB ratio would catch up to him. Well, it’s August, and he’s rolling along. No one ever mentions him anymore. It’s the White Sox, so I don’t expect media BJ pieces. You had to be paying really close attention in 2005 or you might’ve missed the fact they won the World Series. Not that Raj wants to be considered the media, but his season long blowjob of Gavin Floyd has to count for something. Right? Well, ...
