... who had a bad start in place of Orlando Hernández the other day. Hernández is on the DL and is expected to return next Thursday. That leaves at least one start and possibly two that will need to be covered until he gets back. The first of those starts is tomorrow and the rumors are that it will go to either reliever

Pelfrey In Trouble?
Published 5/7/2007 by Dave at Mostly Mets
... once Orlando Hernández comes back from the disabled list. After a positive outing against Florida last week Pelfrey turned in another poor performance yesterday against Arizona. The Diamondbacks only managed 3 hits against Pelfrey but drew 4 walks in 5 1/3 innings. Pelfrey also hit two batters to force in a run. In the meantime Sosa made his first appearance for the Mets on Saturday and allowed 2 runs on 6 1/3 innings. Sosa will get at least one more start before El Duque returns. It is still unknown when exactly Hernández will be ready to come off the DL. Since Sosa has only had one start so far it s hard to tell if Pelfrey will lose his spot in the rotation in favor of Sosa. But after yesterday s start the Mets have to be considering pulling Pelfrey from the rotation until he has shown, either as a reliever or AAA starter, that he has regained his control. ... pulled a quad on Saturday. Though no decision was immediately made it looks like Alou is headed to the DL in the very near future. When that happens the Mets will promote another starting pitcher who will likely have one start before Orlando Hernández returns from the DL. Early speculation has that starter being Jason Vargas. Pelfrey was 0-5 in 6 starts since being recalled from New Orleans to be the fifth starter. His performance was clearly not major league and he ll go back down to triple a, find his stuff and prepare to be called up again some time later this year. Gómez, meanwhile, had a great debut yesterday going 2 for 4 with a double, a stolen base and 2 runs scored. He also made a great catch in right field. A sign of things to come? Most people in the Mets organization seem to think so. We ll see. Related Posts:

Livan Signs With Twins
Published 2/12/2008 by Dave at Mostly Mets
Those fans hoping to see Livan Hernandez join the Mets starting rotation this season will be let down this afternoon when the Minnesota Twins announce they have signed the right hander. There were string rumors that the mets would sign him if they couldn’t land Johan Santana . I still would like the team to acquire another starter and move Orlando Hernandez to the bullpen. Tony Armas Jr. is not that starter. But I suppose it could be much worse and I’m satisfied with starting the season with what they have right now. Tags: Johan Santana , ...

Benson Signs With Phillies

... to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. This will certainly add something to the Mets Phillies rivalry. I’m actually a little upset about this. Benson would have been a good fit to sign a minor league contract with the Mets and challenge for the fifth spot in the rotation, possibly pushing Orlando Hernandez to the bullpen. It’s a shame when third parties, in this case Anna, prevent good signings from happening. The way she burned bridges when Kris was traded made it certain that even under the best circumstances he would never be able to wear a Mets ...

El Duque Starting Slow

... visited Mets cap but general manager Omar Minaya quickly said he is not interested in Garcia and that Garcia was just visiting friends in Mets camp. The only real development is the curious situation of Orlando Hernandez . It was widely reported that El Duque would have surgery to remove a bunion on his right foot during the off-season. However the bunion is reported still there. What isn’t there is part of a second toe that was dislocated and needed surgery. The toe is now shorter than the others and was causing Hernandez to work on his balance. I don’t know of it’s because ...

Pelfrey Does Well in First Spring Outing

... pitched well yesterday. In two innings he allowed one hit, struck out one and faced the minimum 6 batters. It’s too early to prognosticate about Pelfrey’s spot on the 2008 team. He’s the Mets sixth starter which means he’s going to have to do a lot more of that to make the roster and/or push another starter ( Orlando Hernandez ?). Personally I think he needs to spend a full season in the minors where he can pitch regularly and then join the team as a September call up. But the Mets rotation may not be strong enough to allow this without signing another starting pitcher. Tags: ...

... furthered his case to make the team by throwing 3 shutout innings against the Braves yesterday while the man still slated to occupy the rotation spot he covets, Orlando Hernandez , threw a towel instead of a ball. The towel is supposed to create some resistance as El Duque tries to reworks his mechanics to take pressure off his ailing toe. General manager Omar Minaya is optimistic that Hernandez will pitch batting practice on Wednesday and see game action over the weekend. But although a fifth starter won’t be needed until mid April Hernandez is still 2 games behind most of ...

El Duque Throwing
Published 3/5/2008 by Dave at Mostly Mets
There’s finally a reason to feel optimistic about Orlando Hernandez . Due to the injury to his foot El Duque has been working on a new windup that eliminates his trademark high leg kick. The high leg kick was causing pressure on the hurt toe so it had to go in favor of a windup that would cause less pressure to the toe. This morning El Duque was practicing the new windup in the bullpen and was spotted loosening up with a long toss session in the outfield shortly thereafter. I read somewhere (but I forgot where) that he will be throwing a batting practice session today but we’ll ...

With the Mets having 2 off days in the next 8 days they plan on keeping a 4 man rotation for now. The next date to watch is April 13. That’s the day Orlando Hernandez is eligible to come off the DL. The way the Mets handle the rotation through Pedro’s absence could hinge on El Duque’s readiness to return. Hernandez makes his first of three scheduled rehab starts today. Mets Sign Claudio Vargas

... to return and Orlando Hernandez to do whatever it is that he’s going to do we’ll probably see Vargas in the Mets rotation before too long. I mean let’s not kid ourselves. It’s a minor league contract but this is clearly a signing that was done because of issues at the major league level. As such it’s most probable that it was done having in mind that unless the unlikely best case scenario occurs (Martinez and Hernandez recover quickly, stay healthy and are effective the rest of the season) this player will see significant time at the major league level. Wagner Still Hurting

... there was no mention of the possibility Wagner will not return I think it’s about time the Mets plan for that possibility. A bullpen contingency should have been thought of a while ago but for some reason was not. I don’t pretend to know what’s going on in Omar Minaya’s head but it seems like he has a penchant for planning for a season without injuries when he really needs to plan for a season with injuries. The injuries to Wagner, Ryan Church , Moises Alou and Orlando Hernandez prove this. The Mets were ill prepared for any of those injuries. Tags: ...
