CINCINNATI -- A day after his ninth-inning throwing error contributed to the Padres' 9-5 loss to St. Louis, rookie catcher Luke Carlin wasn't still petulant about the one that got away as much as he was resolute about taking something from the experience. "When you make an error like that, one that determines the outcome of a game, you feel like you let the team down," Carlin said before ... [link]

Learning the hard way ...
Published 7/21/2008 by coreybrock at Rich Folkers is throwing up in the bullpen: Life on the beat
CINCINNATI -- No one ever said that this Major League stuff would be easy, as several rookies on the Padres roster are learning -- sometimes the hard way -- this season. Take Sunday. Rookie catcher Luke Carlin, with the Padres only because Michael Barrett and Josh Bard are on the disabled, threw a ball away in the ninth inning against the Cardinals that led to a 9-5 St. Louis victory. In short, with a runner on first, one out and the pitcher up showing bunt, Carlin should have held onto the ball. He said that much Monday when I talked to him here in Cincinnati. As manager Bud Black said, Carlin will be better off for it in the long run. In the short term, though, the Padres, who entered ...

Smells Like Padres in Here - Tuesday Edition
Published 7/22/2008 by Winfield's Ghost at Gaslamp Ball: Front Page Posts
The Reds must be awful because we beat them.  A ninth inning rally and Trevor barely escapes.  Seems like old times.  If, in olden times, we were11.5 back. It appears CY is pretty close. A Happy Wizard

Before I let my giddiness get the best of me, here is a disclaimer. I know that the Cardinals current five-game winning streak has come against the lowly Pirates and Padres and that the rest of this month’s schedule (four at home with Milwaukee, three on the road against the Mets and four on the road against the Braves) will be a much better gauge of how good this team really is.
