One Day More: World Series workout day is here
Big League Stew —
As I scan Tuesday's newspapers, it would appear that Monday redefined the term "slow news day." The New York Times had a story on the Phillies arriving by train in Penn Station, just as the team in 1950 did. The Philadelphia Daily News ran a "Red Hot and Sexy Phillies" story that was an insult to female baseball fans. The New York Post did the traditional "that other town sucks" column, only it was pumped full of steroids. Finally, the New York Daily News won the feelgood story of the day award with a piece on little 16-month-old Jeter Villacis, who just had a heart transplant and ...

[image] Charlie Manuel announced that Pedro Martinez will start game 2 of the World Series in Yankee Stadium. It will be his seventh career appearance in the playoffs versus New York. The main question everyone should be asking is: why? Supposedly Manuel is worried about Hamels’s recent struggles in the playoffs, whereas Pedro pitched reasonably well. That analysis is foolish. Cole Hamels is basically the same pitcher he was last year when he was named World Series MVP. His 2009 and 2008 FIPs are equal, but his BABIP rose from (an admittedly lucky) .270 in 2008 to .325 in 2009. He is allowing roughly the same amount of homers, while striking out more per 9 and walking less per 9. Martinez, on the ...

Pedro Gets Game Two in the Bronx
the700level.com 10/27/2009 — Charlie Manuel had been somewhat tight-lipped regarding his game two starter for the World Series, but when he didn't immediately go with Cole Hamels, the writing was on the wall that we might see Pedro Martinez follow Cliff Lee in the rotation. Interestingly, neither pitcher was on the ...
