Some thoughts on Phil Hughes, working out of the bullpen, via Peter Abraham today -
Armed with the knowledge that he will be in the game for only an inning or two, [Phil] Hughes is throwing his fastball as hard as he did when he first came to the majors.

week he thought he had lost a few years
ago. It was a 96-mph fastball. The 23-year-old right-hander has been pitching in relief since the first week of June when the Yankees decided to return Chien-Ming Wang ...

The Phil Hughes Situation
The Yankee Universe —
... pretty clear from this quote that Hughes is going to stay in the majors for the rest of the season unless he falters out of the bullpen. The Yankees are going to do what is best for the 2009 team, and then stick Phil in the rotation to get 180 innings next season. While I have no problem with that, I think it is imperative that they use Phil properly in the majors. If they are going to delay his development, they need to maximize his value at the big league level. As Steve Lombardi states: ...
Phil Hughes to assume eighth inning role?
lenNY's Yankees —
Joe Girardi continues to call Brian Bruney the setup man on this team, but after last night’s blown save in the eighth, Bruney might be degraded to middle relief. After watching Phil Hughes continue to dominate the sixth and seventh innings, it seems he could potentially replace Bruney for the more important eighth inning. WasWatching.com brings up a good point about using Hughes similar to the way the Yankees used Mariano Rivera in 1996. Have Hughes set up for the closer. Make the 8th ...

The (re)emergence of Phil Hughes
310tojoba.blogspot.com 7/27/2009 — The overhaul of the Yankees bullpen after months of woe and hand wringing has been one of the well-documented stories heading into the second half of the baseball season. Gone are Edwar Ramirez and Jose Veras. Instead, the casual Yankees fan gets to see a much more Aryan bullpen, anchored ...
Hughes Becoming a Weapon Out of the Pen
slidingintohome.blogspot.com 6/22/2009 — From Anothony DiComo : And according to Girardi, he can. For the Yankees, perhaps the brightest spot in this weekend's series loss to the Marlins was Hughes, who so impressed his manager with a perfect inning of relief Saturday that Girardi was prepared to use Hughes out of the 'pen again the ...

Stop being so good, Hughes.
behindthemoat.wordpress.com 7/10/2009 — I would never wish failure on a Yankee. Even if I perhaps do not care for a particular player, or if their success might otherwise hurt my fantasy team’s chances, I still don’t wish failure on them. However, Phil Hughes’s success is scaring me a bit.
Why? Well, quite ...

Hughes Ditches Changeup in New Relief Role
slidingintohome.blogspot.com 7/18/2009 — From Marc Carig : Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes is viewed as a future starter. "None," Cashman said ...
