10,000 Losses For the Phillies
Published 7/16/2007 by Pat Lackey at FanHouse
... I don't see the big deal here. I mean I know as a good Pittsburgher I should be ribbing Philly and their fans for being the most losing franchise in the history of American sports, but what's the point? The Phillies have existed since 1883 according to Baseball-Reference. That's a freaking long time for a sports franchise to last. But the fact is, this doesn't have a lot to do with the current Phillies or even their fans. Over 124 years, it takes 81 losses a year to get to 10,000. Since 1962, that'll get you a .500 record. Granted, when the first incarnation of the Phillies lost 81 games in 98 games in 1883, that was an accomplishment worth talking about. The 2002 Phillies lost just as many games, but 80-81 is just kind of lackluster. ...

Red Rockers

... reak out with four games against the underwhelming Cincinnati Reds. The Mets weren't great, barely pretty good, but the Reds were mediocre, as it seems they've been all season. While the Metropolitans took three of those four, Ollie Perez and Jorge Sosa were re-activated, Lastings Milledge has come charging out of nowhere, and the wheel has spun back towards the top for the Mets. Here's the problem: those schedulers also gave the Mets a bonus West Coast trip, and seven games against division contending stalwarts in their hitter-unfriendly parks could send the New York nine back downward that quickly. Especially unpleasant as the Braves get a week full of the same Reds and the Cardinals. Sad to say, but the Mets may well be a second-place a week from now. Meanwhile, the Phillies just lost their 10,000th game in team history, a singularly woeful feat. If you haven't treated yourself to analyzing just how inept a franchise the Phightin' Phils are, have a sample-size look at ...

With Sunday's 10-6 win over the Mets, the Phillies accomplished something for just the second time in the 125-year history of the franchise: seven straight seasons of at least 80 wins. ...

Phillies Finally Reach 10,000th Loss

Sure, the 10,000 loss mark is a testament to the Phillies futility over the last dozen or so decades, but really it just points out that the Phillies are a really, really old franchise.

125 Years In The Making

Just a short post today but I thought this new record was interesting. On Sunday night, the Philadelphia Phillies became the first team in history to lose 10,000 games. Keep in mind, however, that this franchise got its start on May 1, 1883; much earlier than most. Spectators and rivals alike are doing their best to pull all negative aspects of this record to the forefront. Manager Tony La Russa..
