Thursday’s GM Meetings
KK Hockey —
From Pierre LeBrun at his ESPN blog:
The NHL’s 30 general managers met in Chicago on Thursday and left with some homework. They’ve got to chew on three rule change recommendations before reconvening at their next meeting in March and possibly voting on them.
• The first is the Larry Pleau idea that I first detailed last weekend, essentially changing the delayed penalty rule to the penalized team having to fully clear the puck from their defensive zone to get a stoppage in play, as opposed to simply having puck possession. The St. Louis Blues GM believes, and he’s probably right, it would create more ...

GMs dedicated to removing defense from professional hockey
Puck Daddy —
There is perhaps no better measurement of the NHL's complete slavery to ticket revenue than its stubborn refusal to expand the playing surface of its rinks. The idea that had support from players, executive and media less than five years ago. The rules changes coming out of the lockout, that were intended to juice scoring, have tabled the notion of increasing the ice surface. Now, NHL power brokers are much more content to tweak or revise every single facet of defensive play in the game rather than remove a few rows in the lower bowl. And that leads us down the road to silly ideas like widening the nets rather than substantial ...
Bob is a radical thinker
Four Habs Fans —
So Bob shocked the GM meetings yesterday with a radical approach to boost offense. From LeBrun: The third idea, and perhaps most interesting of all, is an idea from Montreal Canadiens GM Bob Gainey. He proposes that players in the defensive zone must have at least one skate on the ice when blocking shots. So, instead of having players collapsing all over the ice and sliding all over the place, Gainey believes this would allow for more pucks to get through from the point and, hence, create more scoring chances. The sight of a $9 million forward sliding to block a shot in the Playoffs with the potential to get hit in the balls ...
Possible rule changes talked about at the GM meetinsg
Chuqui 3.0 —
... ESPN - Pierre LeBrun Blog:
• The first is the Larry Pleau idea that I first detailed this past weekend, which essentially would change the delayed-penalty rule so that the penalized team would have to fully clear the puck from its defensive zone to get a stoppage in play rather than simply needing to possess the puck. The St. Louis Blues GM believes it would create more offensive chances with the sixth attacker on the ice for a bit longer before a whistle blows. He's probably right. I like this one.
• The second has to do with hand passes and ...
