Pineiro: Pinpoint Control, Worm Killer Extraordinaire
Last evening, Cardinals righty Joel Pineiro put on a pitching clinic that would make Roy Halladay look downright inefficient by comparison. Tossing exactly 100 pitches in a complete game shutout against the Mets, Pineiro pounded the zone for 62 strikes while generating an absurd 22 groundball ...

Reversal of Fortune
Viva El Birdos — ... This brings us back to Pineiro. (I thought I’d end w/ some good news!) There’s a great article at fangraphs about the additional movement Pineiro’s getting on both his regular 4-seam fastball and his 2-seam fastball. While his fastball speed is down, his movement is up and, as a result, he leads the majors in GB%. Even though he’s striking out fewer hitters than ever (and he never was a strikeout pitcher) he’s having more success b/c he’s not walking anyone and he’s getting ground ball after ground ball. He’s been, partly b/c of Carp’s injury, our best starter this year ...

Joel Pineiro’s scorched-earth policy
The Hardball Times — ... would bring him back to the mound once the game resumed. [image] Pineiro isn’t a hard thrower by any stretch of the imagination. As David Golebiewski pointed out at FanGraphs , he’s sacrificed speed for a more pronounced break on his sinking fastball. This year he’s throwing his fastball at an average speed of 88.5 mph, down from the 90.8 mph he threw back in 2007. Not only does he gain movement via his reduction in velocity, it makes him a great candidate to sit out a long rain delay (or inning) and pick up right where he left off. (His pitch speed graph from his start is ...

Series Preview in Blog: St. Louis Cardinals
The WGOM — ... for the struggling righty. Lefties apparently destroy Wellenmeyer, so perhaps we should have Joe play catcher and third base just so he can get the extra plate appearances. Liriano v. J. Pineiro Piñeiro has been very, very good this year for St. Louis. Apparently he took a little bit off of his fastball, gained some extra movement, and has actually been " keeping the ball down " with a league-leading GB%. This has resulted in a low K rate and a super low HR rate. If you're thinking you've seen that combination before, it appears that Piñeiro is actually a Hall of Fame ...

This Guy Again!?
theballclub.blogspot.com 6/24/2009 — I don't know what the hell it is about Joel Pineiro, but it seems like every season he sort of just shows up and puts up mediocre numbers year after year, bouncing around from team to team, and generally just sucking it up and filling a roster spot.
