PIT Post-Gazette: [Prospect Olivo] Astacio attacked teammate with bat The reason the Pirates released pitching prospect Olivo Astacio, two sources confirmed yesterday, was that he attacked another player with a bat earlier in the week during extended spring training in Bradenton, Fla. Astacio and the other player were having an argument, the sources said, and Astacio struck the player’s leg with a swing of his bat. He swung again and missed before the incident was broken up. The other player—who was not identified—is not seriously injured, and no charges have been filed. But ...

Game #30 at Washington

... against one loss. Maholm took the loss in his only start against Washington in 2007. That was back on July 1. Maholm’s track record against the 2008 batch of Nats is solid. They have 16 hits in 70 ABs and have whiffed 16 times, while getting just three passes. None of the Current Nats have more than three hits of Maholm. The Pirates released minor league pitcher Olivo Astacio earlier this week. The reason was reported in today’s Post-Gazette. He swung a bat at a teammate.

Pirates Prospect Hit Teammate With Bat, Released
Published 5/3/2008 by PUNTE at SPORTSbyBROOKS
... Taking a swing at one of your teammates with a bat? Yeah, I’d say that qualifies. Pitching prospect Olivo Astacio was on the rise in the Pirates’ organization until he was suddenly released earlier this week. The team called it “significant violation of organizational policy.” As Dejan Kovacevic of the PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE learned, that policy includes not hitting your teammates with a bat. Astacio and the other player were having an argument, the sources said, and Astacio struck the player’s leg with a swing of his bat. He swung again and missed before the incident ...

The Pirates dropped a close one to the Nationals today while wearing pretty awesome Homestead Grays throwback unis. Whenever there's a one-run game and Ryan Doumit doesn't start, I'm going to wonder what might have been. Ronny Paulino started instead and went 0-for-4 with a walk. The Pirates ...

... Turns out that Astacio got into it with another another player. Their argument escalated to the point where Astacio decided the best course of action would be to attack the player…….. with a bat. He struck him in the leg once and swung again but missed (thats why he’s a pitcher). After the second swing the fight was broken up. ...

... Ok, so this is how quick I left my non-newspapers idea. This one is from the Pittsburgh-post Gazette. This is their daily Pittsburgh Pirates notebook, and what I found interesting is that one of their better prospects was released for attacking a teammate. The player was Olivo Astacio, a former Boston Red Sox prospect, who has had a very checkered past and this may of been his last chance to play for a professional American taem. ...

Relevant Bat Attack!

Over the weekend, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the Pirates had released pitching prospect Olivio Astacio after he attacked a teammate with a bat in extended spring training. Apparently Astacio has a bit of a reputation as a loonball motherfucker, having been drafted by the Red Sox in '02 but sitting out all of 2005 as a disciplinary action. The following year, he only pitched one game for AA Altoona before breaking his hand in a fight. Milton Bradley, ...
