 Player spotlight: Johnny Cueto
Sunday, May 25, 2008 Player spotlight: Johnny Cueto Posted by Derek Carty at 7:58am I mentioned Johnny Cueto the other day, but I wanted to take an even deeper look today. I hope you've been reading some of the excellent analysis done with PITCHf/x already. If not, you're in for a treat, as I think it can lift analysis to new and unprecedented levels. This will mark my first real ... [link]

This is excellent work Derek.  I can't believe it hasn't been talked about more.  Maybe because the holliday weekend but whatever the case please continue to weave the PITCHf/x
data with your already excellent analysis.

Thanks very much for the kind words, Josh.  Pitch f/x is so cool, and I think it adds a lot to the analysis.  Again, thank you for all your hard work with it.

I was away for a few days and didn't get around to reading this until today....

All I have to say is wow. This goes above and beyond probably every player analysis I've ever seen, including the Gassko/Sheets analysis of a few weeks ag. I was trying to pick up Kershaw in a league a few days ago, and was going to drop Cueto simply because my other pitchers have been doing so well that I had no choice but to choose him. I didn't get Kershaw (I was 9th on waivers), and I feel now that I would have regretted making that decision had it gone through.

Thanks very much sdanne.  I'm glad I was able to help.  I think Cueto is a much better bet to be successful than Kershaw this year.

      Good luck!

... Hardball Times uses PitchF/X data to examine Johnny Cueto. They find that one of his biggest assets is the similarity between his slider and changeup: They're the same pitch until the very end, when they "dart in opposite directions 20 feet or so from the plate." Very interesting read. ...
