BPro’s Post-Season Predictions

... Nate Silver does a fantastic (free) job of previewing the Cubs-Diamondbacks series, discussing every player on the post-season roster then running through the odds of each team winning the individual games by taking into account starting pitcher, lineup, fielders, etc. It’s good stuff, and is like ...
NLDS Preview

... Taft @ 9:35 pm I m not going to make this preview all that in-depth because, frankly, Baseball Prospectus has already written up a preview that would put anything I wrote to a sort of shame usually only associated with showing up to school naked in a dream. Indeed, I stole a lot of information in this blog post from that very article, so thanks, Nate Silver. Oh, and if you re not a BP Premium member, don t worry, that s a free article. But if you still want to read what I have to say, press on, because it s riveting and witty as usual. ... Posted on Sun Oct 07, 2007 at 05:36:43 PM EDT Post-season victories: 3. Wins remaining: 8 Quotes of the day " The Cubs have the much better offense, and frankly if Jason Marquis is excised, their edge in the rotation might be nearly as large. Even the D'backs' home-field advantage is questionable " -- Nate Silver , Baseball Prospectus " The Chicago Cubs are going to win the 2007 World Series... From lovable losers to World Series champions? Good things come to those who wait. Their pitching was so good and so deep, they allowed the second-fewest runs in the National League (behind only San Diego) and the third-fewest in baseball (behind Boston and San Diego). That's how you win in October, isn't it? " -- ...

... gives them only a 4.9% chance of reaching 90 wins. Item #2. Baseball Prospectus predicted a 7.0% chance of us sweeping the Cubs. Combining these two, the odds of both happening is one in 289. Really, there's a point at which blaming "luck" in the face of relentless evidence goes beyond stubborness, and begins to drift into idiocy. A good scientist, when the evidence piles up against them, will admit that their theory is flawed, and will begin to look around for a better theory. Jay, however, seems to feel that when the facts disagree with his theory, the facts must be disposed of. Blaming "luck" for an 11-game differential - especially two seasons after the same manager, for the same franchise, posted exactly the same improvement - is like continuing to play poker after your opponent gets three royal flushes in a row. There's a certain point beyond which it's time to check the deck. ...
