Polanco's 5 hits help Tigers edge BoSox (AP)
Placido Polanco hit a broken-bat, tiebreaking single with two outs in the ninth off Jonathan Papelbon to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 10-9 win over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night. Boston had everything set up for its sixth straight win, rallying from a four-run deficit with its star closer on the mound. [link]

Placido Polanco bails out the Marlboro Man
Published 5/8/2008 by Big Al (noreply@blogger.com) at The Wayne Fontes Experience
Being away from the PC all day, I didn't think I'd feel like writing tonight. But I had to say something about the Tigers beating the Red Sox 10-9 with the damnedest bottom of the 9th, 2 run rally you've ever seen... ...

In Detroit, only questions. No hamsters.
Yesterday we thought we were getting hamsters. We thought that Placido Polanco had brought us the hamsters we had all been looking for. It turns out that those were false hamsters, or maybe just temporary hamsters, because today it was right back to the questions. Questions such as: What in the cat damned hell is up with Justin Verlander? Jack Morris said that he thinks Verlander is hurt. ...
Coincidence?
Probably just a coincidence, but Josh Beckett just happened to hit the guy who had five hits and the game-winning single last night, in Placido Polanco. Beckett got him on the left hand with a 94 mile per hour fastball. It was his first hit batter of the season.
Sox Lose Ugly In Detroit, 10-9
It doesn’t get much uglier than this one. This one was U-G-L-Y from the outset… starting when Clay Buchholz slipped and inadvertently kicked a slow dribbler that was heading for foul territory and ending when Placido Polanco’s bat exploded while connecting with a Jonathan Papelbon fastball — turning his Big Stick into kindling on a play that drove in the game-winning ...
Placido Polanco has our hamsters
To recap: A few days ago I heard some guy on the radio say, “Jim Leyland doesn’t have any answers.” It sounded like the guy had said, “Jim Leyland doesn’t have any hamsters.” We assumed that this was also true, and that maybe the problem with the Tigers was simply that there were not enough hamsters in the clubhouse, or at least in Jim Leyland’s ...
Spoiled rally
Mike Lowell tied the game with a three run homerun in top of the seventh to make it 8-8. Dustin Pedroia drove home J.D. Drew on a single to left to take a 9-8 lead in the top of the eight, but the comeback fell short as Jonathan Papelbon did not hold onto the lead [...]
Tigers win
Jonathan Papelbon blew tonight's save, with an assist from Julio Lugo's ninth-inning error, as the Tigers took this one 10-9 on Placido Polanco's broken-bat single over the glove of Lugo. Polanco raised his arms over his head in celebration as he made it to first base, Edgar Renteria scoring on the play.
Placido Polanco Has Five Hits In Wild Tigers Win
The Tigers lost two different four runs leads and needed to come back in the ninth inning against Jonathan Papelbon to end their five game losing streak tonight. The game winning hit was a texas league single off the bat of Placido Polanco and it also happened to be his fifth hit of the ballgame. The [...]
Detroit lineup
And for the Tigers... 1. Curtis Granderson, CF 2. Placido Polanco, 2B 3. Carlos Guillen, DH 4. Magglio Ordonez, RF 5. Miguel Cabrera, 1B 6. Gary Sheffield, LF 7. Edgar Renteria, SS 8. Ivan Rodriguez, C 9. Brandon Inge, 3B Nate Robertson, SP
The Closer Continuum: Slovenly Eric Gagne, Calling Myself Out
First of all, I need to call myself out: last week, during a discussion of Gary Sheffield as a buy-low candidate, I claimed that “Jim Leyland will continue to insert him in the three-hole until he can’t play.” One week later, the Detroit Tigers lineup for tonight reads as follows: 1. Curtis Granderson, OF 2. Placido Polanco, 2B 3. Carlos Guillen, 3B 4. Magglio Ordonez, DH ...
Bases on balls
That was Daisuke Matsuzaka's fourth walk of the game, when he walked Curtis Granderson on just four pitches to open the third inning. Sure, he hasn't given up any hits, but he has also thrown more balls than strikes, as he hits 50 (a strike) to Placido Polanco. Of his first 50, 26 were balls. That's not good news for Matsuzaka -- or for the bullpen.
Tigers lineup
So they haven't decided on a right fielder or a designated hitter. But without those positions -- and without Jacque Jones, who was designated for assignment -- here's the rest of the Detroit lineup for tonight's game. Tigers 1. Curtis Granderson, CF 2. Placido Polanco, 2B 3. Carlos Guillen, 3B 4. Magglio Ordonez, either DH or RF 5. Miguel Cabrera, 1B 6. Gary Sheffield, LF 7. Matt ...
Changes not quite drastic
Per Danny Knobler , the lineup tonight is 1. Curtis Granderson, CF 2. Placido Polanco, 2B 3. Carlos Guillen, 3B 4. Maglio Ordonez, DH 5. Miguel Cabrera, 1B 6. Gary Sheffield, LF 7. Matt Joyce, RF 8. Edgar Renteria, SS 9. Pudge Rodriguez, C So the lineup hardly changed. Sheffield moved into the field, for the night anyway. I don’t really see Magglio Ordonez as becoming the ...
