... In Tim Kawakami’s latest post, we’re directed us to this Brian Sabean Q&A from 2006. Sabean hits at the necessity of free agent pitching. (crosses fingers and hopes for Barry Zito….) The Yankees are scouting Randy Winn, whose average dropped to .277 when I was in the restroom. Yeesh. We’ll take Austin Jackson and call it even, Cashman. And give us back Dan Giese while you’re at it. I liked that guy. Tim Alderson is good. If you have Google stock, sell. Gameday Thread comments ...

... Another game where Tommy Hanson was just straight dealing. In 104 innings this year he has only allowed 77 hits. That is pretty unreal. He has wallked a few more batter since he moved to AA but his last few starts have been remarkably steady (save for the game before his no hitter where he gave up 6 runs). Jordan Schafer must not like being mentioned poorly by Baseball America. Of course he was hitless in 8 straight games and has 6 hits in his last 3 though he still hasn't shown any real power. ...

... 1. Brett Anderson is listed #2 on last week's BA Prospect Hotsheet. Besides pointing out that he has become one of the best all-around best pitching prospects in the minors, BA mentions that his fastball and secondary pitches are "frequently plus offerings", that he has "premium command" and that him and Gio form the best 1-2 punch of lefty prospects in the entire minor leagues. ...

Holt Makes BA Prospect Hot Sheet

2008 Mets’ supplemental 1st round draft pick Brad Holt has dominated the New York Penn League for the Mets’ affiliate the Brooklyn Cyclones so far this year.  The 6′4″ righty from UNC Wilmington is 3-2 in seven starts for the Cyclones.  In 34.1 innings of duty, he has struck out 51 batters while walking only 14. This week, Baseball America has him listed #5 on their prospect hot sheet, writing: Holt makes his second straight appearance on the Hot Sheet after a two-start week where he fanned 21 batters in 11 ...

Minor League Prospect Watch - Brandon Wood

... This has been true throughout his career, but for a guy who can fit at shortstop or third base, the sort of outburst Wood displayed this week could make him attractive to other teams as the trade deadline approaches. With nearly two full seasons of Triple-A experience, Wood has had ample time (732 at-bats) to show what kind of player he can be. In that time he's batted .275/.340/.518 with 42 home runs (one every 17.4 at-bats) and 71 walks and 200 strikeouts (.35-to-1 ratio). (Baseball America) ...

Minor League Prospect Watch - Dexter Fowler

... big week. He had only one extra-base hit this week—and scouts still have concerns about whether the 6-foot-4, 175-pound Fowler will ever develop legitimate pop—but he continued to show an excellent knowledge of the strike zone. In 382 at-bats, Fowler's slash stats are at .332/.429/.505 with 61 walks and 79 strikeouts. But with his plus defense in center field and his ability to hit for average and get on base, even moderate power would make Fowler an above-average big leaguer. (Baseball America) ...
