Gossage Tells Joba to Act Like a Yankee
Published 5/11/2008 by Greg Cohen (noreply@blogger.com) at Sliding Into Home: A Yankees Blog
In my post about Cashman and Girardi defending Joba’s fist pump yesterday I ended it by writing, “OK, I'm down talking about this fist pump nonsense. . . Well, at least until the next idiot complains about it.” Well, we’ve found our next idiot; former Yankees and soon to be Hall Of Famer Goose Gossage. From Bob Klapisch: "I'm on Dellucci's side. That's just not the Yankee way, what Joba did. Let everyone else do that stuff, but not a Yankee," Gossage said by telephone on Saturday. "What I don't understand is, the kid's got the greatest mentor in the ...

Klapisch: Goose tells Joba to act like a Yankee (Attention, major self-serving, name dropping spot forthcoming) Hanging with Klap (and Belth, and the Lederer’s and Camillo the hairy-armed waiter) the other night he had mentioned Mount Gossage might be spewing...so here tis. But Goose always has hated showboaters, past and especially present day, so when Dellucci told reporters he thought Chamberlain’s response was immature and “bush,” Gossage didn’t hesitate to say, “I’m on Dellucci’s side. “That’s just not the Yankee way, what Joba did. Let everyone else do that stuff, but not ...
Goose Gossage Has Words For Joba's Fist

Filed under: New York, Yankees, AL EastPoor Joba Chamberlain. There he is, playing baseball with his typically intense body language -- fist-pumping and so on -- and because he's a young guy and not yet considered a True Yankee, he has to hear quasi-hypocritical nonsense from people that haven't played in ages. Case in point: Goose Gossage, who wants Joba to act like a "Yankee." Whatever that means (via BBTF): "That's just not the Yankee way, what Joba did. Let everyone else do that stuff, but not a Yankee," ...

... season. Is it a coincidence that Beltran's latest hot streak, which has helped the Mets to a series victory over the Reds with an 8-3 victory on Sunday, and brought his RBI total from 13 to 21 over the last two days (with the help of his pink bat), has coincided with Keith Hernandez coming back from his sixteen week vacation to join the booth for a few games*? Yes, it is a coincidence. And that brings me to my latest rant: Goose Gossage decided to weigh in on the Joba Chamberlain fist pump controversy. For those who don't know or care, ...

... ENOUGH, ALREADY: It's one thing for opponents to be irritated by Joba Chamberlain's pumping and screaming and dancing. But now Goose Gossage is telling him to knock it off and act like a Yankee. (Bergen Record) ...
Not the Yankee way? Phooey!

So, former Yankee outfielder Roy White is not too thrilled with the way Robinson Cano and Melky Cabrera celebrate Yankee victories. And Hall of Fame reliever Goose Gossage thinks Joba Chamberlain should forget the fist pump.
These revelations were included in a recent Bob Klapisch column.
I love both of these guys. Gossage, of course, is a historic Yankee and took part in many of the most memorable baseball moments of my lifetime. White is a classy guy who ...

... all about Joba getting revenge for the home run Dellucci hit off him a few nights earlier. In other words, it was selfish, and had nothing to do with the game situation. To me, Chamberlain would have been more of a bad ass if he had just stalked off the mound after making Dellucci look helpless. I think his antics undermined a beautiful sequence of pitches. It isn't a that big a deal, certainly not worth all the attention it has gotten on WFAN, but that is my take. According to Bob Klapisch , former Yankees Goose Gossage and Roy White weren't impressed either: Goose ...

... to the team on a day-to-day basis. It s understandable, though. When a respected player with a good personality and rapport with the media reaches Hall of Fame status, he becomes a go-to guy for any story with the objective of comparing the past to the present. Such is the case with The Goose. With two and a half months until his enshrinement in Cooperstown, he is everywhere and is being treated as the de facto authority on all things Yankees. Bob Klapisch s Sunday column in the Bergen Record , which was later narced by the Associated Press, is further proof of this. When Joba ...
