Pujols angered at La Russa for All-Star benching - MLB
SAN FRANCISCO -- Albert Pujols was angry about being left on the All-Star bench and the St. Louis slugger took aim at the National League manager -- who just happened to be Tony La Russa of his own Cardinals. "It's the All-Star Game. He can do what he wants," Pujols said Tuesday night. "He does whatever he wants. If I wasn't expecting to play, I wouldn't have come up here." Pujols, the NL MVP ... [link]

How can LaRussa justify Aaron Rowand was the right guy to send to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th? As a life-long Cardinals fan, this was a very disappointing.

Has LaRussa given up on the Cardinals to get into the playoffs this year and have a shot at the WS with Home Field Advantage?

I'm still unsure as to why Pujols wasn't a pinch-hitter in Rowand's spot. Not to knock the guy, but the AL had just given up a 2-run homer and walked three straight batters with 2 out. Rodriguez was desperate to throw a strike. Why wouldn't you put someone up there who would either a) intimidate Rodriguez into walking the tying run in or b) punish him severely for grooving a pitch?

Tony...What Were You Thinking?
Published 7/11/2007 by Hank Worrell at Winning The Turnover Battle
... Tony La Russa evidently didn't think so, as he elected to let Aaron Rowand take his second at bat with the game on the line. While home field advantage in the World Series doesn't matter much to La Russa and the Cardinals, I am sure fans of the Mets, Brewers, and Padres were sitting at home pulling their hair out over Tony's choice not to have Pujols hit. So was there a method to his madness? According to La Russa, he was trying to protect his team in case the game went into extra innings: ...

... On Sunday, if the Cardinals had two outs in the bottom of the ninth, the bases were loaded, and they were down by one run, Tony La Russa certainly would have wanted Albert Pujols up. On Tuesday, he'd prefer to go with Aaron Rowand. Rowand lined out, Pujols rode pine, and now everyone's unhappy. ...

But now the rest of you understand the pain of being managed by a guy who just has to Make A Decision, even if it's in the face of logic and, more important (we are talking about the All-Star Game, after all), fun..." One of the best hitters in baseball -- his own player! -- ready and waiting to pinch hit. And La Russa has to pull one of his "I'm the manager and you cannot comprehend my wisdom" moves. He's been doing this crap for a decade in St. Louis, often in the postseason when the Birds could afford it the least. (One of the reasons St. Louis had its historic October run was because a depleted roster had tied La Russa's hands; he had no choice but not to tinker.) That sums it up nicely.  I will add, however, that LaRussa could have "gotten off the hook" if he had simply come out and said, "You know, I just wanted to give Aaron Rowand a shot."  Instead, he plays the game of incredulity: "how could you question me?  If you don't like the decision, tough." ...

I generally think all the hoopla surrounding the event is a bit much, but baseball's "midsummer classic" remains the best of any the major sports league's self-promoting events. There's something about seeing all the different uniforms on the field that's still pretty cool. It's not the same as when I was a kid, but it's the only all-star event I even think about watching. One person who apparently didn't have a very good time is Albert Pujols, who was left on the bench by Tony LaRussa (for reasons only Tony LaRussa knows) and was not happy about it . Check out ...

... The All-Star game was solid for the second consecutive year. The National League just can't catch a break, can they? This time they actually come back on the AL for once and then LaRussa decides not to play his own guy, Albert Pujols, who just happens to probably be the most clutch hitter in the National League, with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth in a one run game. How do you let Rowand bat in that situation? To make it worse, Pujols was actually angry after the game and LaRussa came off like an idiot and was completely content his franchise player was upset. ...
