studes Awesome, Colin! I have to take some time to digest this, but I love seeing a fielding list that includes Germany Smith next to Brooks Robinson. -
JinAZ Great work. Like Studes, I think that what's really exciting about this is that it gives us something that can be used to look at fielding prior to 1956. Have you tried comparing it to Davenport's FRAA at BPro? That's the only alternative, really.

Tracy Awesome indeed.
Best of all, it validates the perceptions at the time - contemporary sources all testify to the prowess of Smith, Glasscock, and McPhee. Similarly, most of us would agree that Palmer, Madlock, and Orta were brutal in the field.

devil_fingers Just add my name to the list of kudos, Colin. Now I have no choice but to somehow get RetroSheet on my computer... add in baserunning and arms, and every person in the world now has the basic tools to calculate WAR in whatever way we see fit. -
Wes Parkers Mood (Mike Green) Nice stuff. Don't forget that you'll want to do park-adjustments, to the extent possible, at some point. And when the outfielders are done, it is important that you compare the sum of the individual ratings on a club in a year with the team DER (or DER adjusted for park and fly/ground). Not every year/team need be done!

ian2813 Nice work. Interesting though, that Hal Chase comes out as a poor fielder when he was considered one of the best defensive first basemen ever by his peers (perhaps it was some of those errors he made on purpose when throwing games).

BBTF's Baseball Primer Newsblog —
... Colin Wyers posted part 1 of a description of a new fielding measurement system at the end of last week. It was picked up by Tango, and there has been a desultory discussion on the Book Blog subsequently, in which Rally said: For the pre-1990’s retrosheet stuff, Colin is on the same track as TotalZone, and some of his results are really similar - Brooks, Ozzie, Belanger....And that is pretty much how I intend to handle the pre-retrosheet stuff. Assign hits based on handedness of the pitcher (which is all you have to go on) and figure plays made from the primitive stats of ...
