The Big Unit…a Giant.
Fanster.com — RJ and the Giants just came to terms on a one year, $8M deal.  An additional $5M are available in performance bonuses. It seemed that it was a competition between the two Bay teams for Randy's services with the Giants ultimately outbidding the A's.  Seems to me that how reasonable this contract is (and, connected to that, how outraged D-Backs fans should be) is based on the performance bonuses.  If the bonuses are easily reachable (say, 150 IP), then this looks like a deal that we had no business trying to compete with.    ...

Giant Unit
YFSF — ... ESPN reports that Randy Johnson has signed a 1 year, $8 million contract with the San Francisco Giants. Add him to Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain and that's a formidable front 3. The rest of the team, however, could use some work. Johnson is five games short of 300, and with the lineup SF will field, it might take him some time to reach the milestone. Maybe they should bring back Barry Bo and Jeff Kent; they could use the bats, and it sure would make for an interesting clubhouse—a little bit of Fallujah by the Bay.  ...

Five Thoughts on This Dull, Dull Off-Season
Sons of Steve Garvey — ... 3. Need extra cash, Greg Maddux? Randy Johnson got $8 million, and he's 45. You, on the other hand, will be a sprightly 43, and you don't throw like you're trying to boomerang your arm around the peanut vendor in Section 13.
