Timberwolves File Lawsuit Against AEG Over Target Center Signage
The Biz of Basketball :: Part of the Business of Sports Network —
The Minnesota Timberwolves Limited Partnership filed a lawsuit today in Hennepin County District Court seeking resolution of a dispute with AEG, the operator of the Target Center, arising out of AEG's failure to give its consent to the Minnesota Timberwolves' proposal to install signs on the Second Avenue North exterior face of the Target Center.
The lawsuit alleges that the contractual arrangements relating to Target Center provide that AEG's consent is required in order for the Minnesota Timberwolves to install additional exterior signs on Target Center, and that AEG is not permitted to withhold its consent "unreasonably." The Minnesota Timberwolves claim AEG has unreasonably withheld its consent.
"We generally have a fine ...
Yankees Make Some Want to Eat the Rich

Vitriol seems to come in its biggest doses when it comes to baseball. It just seems to incite some deep emotion that other sports, don’t. Sure, the NBA, NHL, and NFL has its far share of fans that get bent out of shape, but that seems directed at the players, or the occasional owner, even referee, but rarely at the league’s underlying structure.
Here’s an example:
In the last ten years, the Los Angeles Lakers have won the NBA Championship four times, three of them in a row from 2000-02.
In the same span, the New England Patriots have won the Super Bowl three times, twice in a row in 2003 and 2004.
And yet, the insanity over the Yankees winning in 2009 (and in reality, the other ...
Nationals Front Office Latest to See Pink Slips
Sports Bash —
The job market is tough these days. Reuters just reported that the national jobless rate is at 10.2 percent, a 16 and 1/2 year high.
And while MLB attendance was down less than expected (the 2009 regular season ended with 73,418,529 in total attendance a decline of 6.58 percent. See Inside The Numbers: Final 2009 MLB Regular Season Attendance for details), some clubs were hit harder than others.
And, if you stunk it up in the standings, which the Washington Nationals did in near record fashion you see attendance even worse .
As I reported in the “Inside the Numbers” piece:
The Nationals finished in the standings with a 59-103 record (.364), the worst record in the ...
The Weekend Linkfest!

Some things to read while being a real man or while putting up your holiday decorations.
I would like to preface this by kind of letting everyone know what is going on. As KL posted friday, Morineko, FtJ and I will be your new weekend editors. What that means is we will be hanging around and posting a weekend news post to keep things alive on the weekends. KL asked us to "make it our own" and do what we'd like with the post. I, personally, will probably be following the same basic format as the Frosty Mugs, though I can't speak on whether the other two will be doing anything radically different. Hopefully we can get it so it is nearly as active on Saturday and Sunday as it is ...
"Buzz" Hargrove Resigns As Interim Ombudsman of NHLPA
The Biz of Hockey :: The Business of Sports Network —
THIS IS BREAKING NEWS…
NHLPA interim ombudsman “Buzz” Hargrove has resigned effectively immediately. According to Liz Mullen of the SportsBusiness Journal via Twitter, Hargrove said, "Under current circumstances, I can not perform duties of ombudsman."
There had been several reports, including this one from TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger via Twitter, that Hargrove was going to be voted out of the position and that Hargrove was going to resign before that time. Today may have well been that move, although Hargrove said, "I had no worry of being forced out."
Hargrove said surveillance by the NHLPA’s review committee made it impossible to carry out ...
Hank Steinbrenner, Levine, Selig, Others… Quotes on MLB’s Salary Cap
Sports Bash —
Some of the most popular material that I (here, here, here, and here), or others such as Pete Toms and Matthew Coller at the Business of Sports Network have covered has been on salary caps in sports, namely, MLB’s.
I’m against it for a number of reasons, but that doesn’t mean I don’t feel that some other method of restraining high spenders (namely, the Yankees) can’t be done outside of a hard cap system (see Reasons for Not Having a Salary Cap in MLB are Numerous).
But, what are others saying? Here’s a handful of quotes:
“Having the largest payroll doesn’t automatically mean you’re going to win. ...
