BoSox trade for Jeremy Hermida
Lone Star Ball —
... Boston has acquired COF Jeremy Hermida from the Florida Marlins in exchange for LHPs Hunter Jones and Jose Alvarez.
While this appears to be a salary dump for Florida -- Hermida made $2.25 million in 2009, and will probably get $3.5-4 million in 2010, making him a potential non-tender candidate for the Marlins -- they look like they got some talent back. Jones is just a random 25 year old arm, but Alvarez put up good numbers as a 20 year old in the New York-Penn League (although he didn't make the BA League top 20).

... sources . In reality, this could be a brilliant move. Hermida, 25, never caught on the way the Marlins organization hoped, but he was well regarded enough when drafted to be fast-tracked through the Marlins' minor league system. However, there's no apparent place on the roster that Hermida intuitively fits. Is he an insurance policy to start in left field if Jason Bay leaves? If so, that's depressing. Is he next season's fourth outfielder? If so, how will he hit lefties, a role Rocco Baldelli had in 2009? Hermida hit a microscopic .189/.289/.311 in 106 at-bats against lefties ...

Where Hermida fits with Red Sox

I wasn't sure what to make of the Red Sox trading for Jeremy Hermida , so I went to Fire Brand of the American League . There's no way that "Boston" heads into 2010 aiming for anything less than 95 wins and a trip to the World Series. If Jason Bay 's not re-signed and Hermida winds up in left field, he'll have a decent platoon partner and the Red Sox won't be awful in left field. Granted, they won't be as good as they were in 2009, which means they'll have to improve somewhere else. The two obvious candidates are shortstop and catcher and they're already on ...
