Rosenthal's Latest: Padilla, Manny, Beltre, Dunn
Published 7/1/2008 by Tim Dierkes at MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com
Rumor man Ken Rosenthal has a new column up. At least three teams have inquired on the Rangers' Vicente Padilla: the Mets, Yankees, and Brewers.  Jon Daniels is looking for "quality young pitching." Manny Ramirez's $20MM option for '09 isn't a lock.  It's a tough call - .900 OPS players on one-year deals don't grow on ...

To Manny or Not To Manny
Published 7/1/2008 by Nick-YF at YFSF
... From Ken Rosenthal's latest: It was, to a degree; Manny mostly acts like a big kid who wouldn't hurt anyone. Still, McCormick is 64, and when you come right down to it, there is little difference between Ramirez's behavior and Shawn Chacon's — except that Chacon is a journeyman while Ramirez is a future Hall of Famer. To this point, I've thought it was a lock that the Red Sox would exercise Ramirez's $20 million option for next season, but now I'm not so sure. Manny's production no longer is otherworldly. The free-agent market would offer no ...

Mets looking at Vincente Padilla
Published 7/1/2008 by Dom DiFucci (noreply@blogger.com) at Dom D's Mets Fan Blog
In Ken Rosenthal's Foxsports Column he says: The Rangers will be a team to watch at the deadline, acting as both a possible buyer for bullpen help and seller of veteran talent. Right-hander Vicente Padilla, the subject of inquiries from the Mets, Yankees and Brewers, among other clubs, is perhaps their most intriguing commodity. The Rangers, however, only would move Padilla if they received quality young pitching in return. Padilla, who turns 31 on Sept. 27, is on pace to produce 14-plus wins and 200-plus innings for the fourth time. His contract — $11 million this season and $12 million next season with a $12 million option for 2010 — isn't terribly excessive for that type ...

An array of Red Sox pre-game thoughts
Published 7/1/2008 by Jeff Louderback at Sox and Pinstripes | Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees – The Greatest Rivalry in Baseball
... FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal believes that it is not a sure thing that Boston will pick up Manny Ramirez's $20 million option in 2009. I agree with Rosenthal. Remember, Theo Epstein inherited Ramirez, and he placed the slugger on irrevocable waivers before. As Rosenthal noted, there are no free agents that Boston could sign to play left field and remotely match Ramirez's numbers. Yet Ramirez is not the same hitter he was even a few years ago, though he is still a run producer. I believe he will be back with the Red Sox in 2009, but his spot on the roster is not etched in stone. ...

Trade Stuff

Here is a list of recent rumors and such I've came across in the last few days. John Fay: --I'm told that three scouts were here last night specifically to look at David Weathers. I still think Weathers and Jeremy Affeldt will attrach as much trade talk as anyone on the Reds. Clubs are always looking to upgrade their bullpens. Both Weathers and Affeldt are free agents after the season, making them easy to trade. C. Trent Rosencrans: Good day for Bronson Arroyo to bounce back. I've been told that the Phillies may have been scouting Arroyo in Cleveland and the Reds had people in Texas watching Philadelphia. Ken ...

Rosenthal: Red Sox might be wise to wash hands of Manny
Published 7/1/2008 at BBTF's Baseball Primer Newsblog
Rosenthal: Red Sox might be wise to wash hands of Manny Robothal with the latest Goop. A’s general manager Billy Beane says Dwight Gooden and Rich Harden are the two most dominant pitchers he has seen, putting them ahead of even Roger Clemens and Randy Johnson. “I’m not saying they’re better — that’s not my point — but when you see Rich and Doc at the right time, hitters look defeated,” Beane says. “When Clemens was dominant, when Randy Johnson was dominant, they would blow people away. But guys would still take swings up there like they thought they were going to get ‘em. “You ...

Baseball Flotsam and Jetsam Miscellaneous baseball thoughts and observations. Ken Rosenthal raises the interesting question about the Red Sox NOT exercising their option on Manny Ramirez for 2009 . I think the Red Sox will exercise the option but if Manny finishes the year with 30 HR, 100 RBI and an OPS+ of 130 - then they will definitely think about it. And if Manny acts up again between now and the end of the year - then they will think long and hard about whether having Manny around is worth it. Manny is lucky that there are no big name outfielders available in this year's ...

Mets still looking at Vicente
Published 7/2/2008 by Ed Ryan (noreply@blogger.com) at Mets Fever
The Mets have been rumored to be interested in Vicente Padilla for at least two years. It was reported that the Rangers wanted quite a bounty for Padilla this off-season when the Mets asked about him. "You wanted what, for Padilla" was a post I completed which discusses what the Rangers wanted along with a brief bio on him. Padilla a great fastball and devastating curve ball, but he has control problems along with off the field issues. Surprised that they'd still be interesting, Manuel didn't like how slow Claudio Vargas was with men on base and Padilla makes Trax look like he's working fast. But apparently the Mets are still interested in him. according to Ken Rosenthal their not the only ...

... - Ken Rosenthal says the Brewers were among the teams who've inquired about Rangers pitcher Vicente Padilla: Doug is very familiar with the Rangers organization and has traded with them before. Padilla is hot and cold, but has been capable of around 10-15 wins and 200 IP in past seasons. He's to make $12 M the next two seasons and currently pitching the best he ever has in his decade long career, so he may be a hefty gamble... but could act as possible '09 rotational insurance if free agency sends Sheets to the wind. I'm cooking up an expanded post on pitchers for Friday. ...

... of 7.6 hits per game. They've also wasted outstanding starts by Tim Wakefield and Josh, each of whom gave up just one run in seven innnings of work in their respective starts. The bottom line? Once again, nobody said this American League East was going to be easy, and when you put up the kind of numbers Boston's offense has lately, it makes it infinitely more difficult to win. Now, can somebody get me a shovel? I'd like to smack some sense into the usually smart Ken Rosenthal, who weighed in with this epic piece yesterday afternoon .

Trading Game: Adrian Beltre
Published 7/2/2008 by Jon Shields at Bleeding Blue and Teal
While there are much more obvious players to trade, Seattle could come to a point within the next month where they’re considering dealing third baseman Adrian Beltre.  Before I go any further I’d like to mention that I’m a huge Beltre fan.  Possibly my favorite current Mariner, I love the passion he brings to the field, the toughness he exhibits and the Gold Glove defense, not to mention the “happy feet” and entertaining check swings.  He’s also been one of Seattle’s most productive hitters, and is showing more and more pop every year since signing a mega-contract once considered a huge bust. Over the last season or so I thought that the Mariners ...

FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal wonders if, in the light of the incident, the Sox will have second thoughts about picking up Ramirez' 2009 option, especially since his production "no longer is otherworldly." ...

ROSENTHAL ON SABATHIA, CUBS CHANCES
Published 7/2/2008 by The Zoner at Zoner Sports
Ken Rosenthal’s latest column has a great take on the Manny situation and this nugget on the Cubbies: “The prevailing wisdom is that the Cubs’ farm system isn’t deep enough for them to land a pitcher such as Sabathia, but rating prospects often is tricky. Not long ago, center fielder Felix Pie and left-hander Rich Hill were two of the Cubs’ top youngsters. Neither has become the player the club envisioned, while catcher Geovany Soto, shortstop Ryan Theriot and reliever Carlos Marmol — a converted catcher/outfielder — have greatly exceeded expectations.” Yes, that is “so Cubs” as I am wont to say. And while that ...

... The A's are apparently looking at Adrian Beltre, from the Mariners. This one doesn't make much sense at all to me, I have to say. Beltre hasn't had a really good season since his contract year, he's owed $12 million next season, and the A's have a pretty good third baseman already, as far as I know. Actually, I take that back. I just checked Eric Chavez's page; he's been awful this year. I hadn't been paying that much attention to the A's this year, to be honest. Does anybody know what in the world has happened to Chavez? ...

The Manny Backlash Begins to Grow

Manny's behavior in Houston is getting more attention mainly because of the way it was swept under the rug. Bob Ryan of the Globe calls out the Sox for their handling of the situation: Manny was not just out of line. Manny was actually indulging in a criminal act. The Red Sox had an obligation to inform the rest of the organization, as well as the rest of baseball, that they will not tolerate criminal acts on the part of anyone, even future first-ballot Hall of Famers such as Manny Ramírez. It is incomprehensible that such smart people as John Henry, Larry Lucchino, and Theo Epstein didn't understand how much they had to gain by taking a stand for honor and decency. There is no more ...

I don’t want to talk about this, either, but I feel compelled. I saw the most absurd sequence of plays last night. Here’s how it went: with Howry on the mound, Ray Durham.... oh, what the hell, Ray Durham pops it up back of third base. Theriot and Fontenot go back on it, Edmonds comes in on it, none of them actually catch the ball. Drops right in between the three of them. Edmonds gets the ball back into the infield... only nobody is covering second and Durham is in with a double. Then - then! - Howry and DeRosa are standing ...

Anybody else as overwhelmingly foggy this morning as I am? Holy shit, I'm not sure I'm quite ready to resume real life after an epic extendo holiday weekend. I thought yesterday was bad when a hundred hacks at a batting cage made me want to take a two hour nap-- which I would have done if I hadn't been sucked in by Beau's flashy new copy of a cinematic masterpiece that this man-animal likes to call Battlefield Earth. Anywho, last night's game was one that I can almost take losing. Almost. I say that because at least the hitters were decent, and it was the bullpen who shit the bed-- like a normal team. I mean, obviously it was a bit of a hand-chop to the throat when it all went down, ...

Four miscellaneous thoughts as the Matschulat household feverishly prepares for a 4½-hour Thursday afternoon road trip down I-35 to the land of the Round Rock Express: ● Yes, manager Ron Washington was in a tough spot with Frankie Francisco, Josh Rupe and Eddie Guardado all unavailable due to either lingering physical maladies or excessive pitch count totals. I understand that. I comprehend that. But, at the same time, there’s no getting around the fact that Washington set up flamethrowing rookie Warner Madrigal to fail by throwing him into the fire the way he did.
