Bronx Banter: The Constant Gardner

... into home, brushing against Joba Chamberlain's leg in the fifth inning, and Chamberlain threw a pitch behind The Greek God of Walks in the sixth before walking him on a 3-2 pitch. Joba vs Youk would be some Beffy Battle Royale but it'll have to wait for another day. The loudest fight of the night came when Joe Girardi got himself run for arguing balls and strikes with home plate ump, Laz Diaz. But the Yanks had the biggest fight in them, as they rallied and won in extra innings, 5-4 . Chamberlain pitched well in the early going, working quickly and efficiently through the ...

... at 4. His night ended after he got Melky Cabrera to ground into a fielder’s choice. Delcarmen came in and struck out Molina to end the inning but the damage was done. Hopefully the Red Sox will get back to their winning ways at Fenway Park tomorrow night when the red-hot Minnesota Twins come calling. Daisuke Matsuzaka will be looking for his 10th win and hopefully will pitch a lot better than he has of late. Notes and musings: Red Sox @ Yankees 7.06.08 boxscore Manny Ramirez was hit by 3 pitches on ...

And That Happened

... Yankees 5, Red Sox 4: A-Rod ties Mickey Mantle on the career home run list. The brain works in funny ways, though, and mine hadn't really ever put those two converging numbers together at once until Rodriguez hooked that ball around the left field pole in the second inning and ESPN flashed it on the screen. For a few moments I sat there thinking "Wow. Mickey Mantle. This Rodriguez fellow might be pretty good." And of course I know better. ...

Replay Revealing

Shows how much tennis I watch (almost none)...the replay at Wimbledon was stunning in its simplicity and accuracy. And as the Red Sox fritter away another late inning lead, Julio Lugo couldn't even knock down a 99-hopper up the middle by the Yankee newboy. No matter, as Cano was about 30 feet from home plate anyway, and there's NO WAY Lugo throws him out from his knees sprawling to his left. ...
