Redskins Like Safety Landry, but Drafting Isn't That Easy
Safety LaRon Landry may be considered the best defensive player available in the NFL draft by many in the Washington Redskins' organization, but that doesn't mean that taking him with the sixth overall pick Saturday is an automatic decision. Landry's talent and potential are beyond debate, but executives from several other teams say they wonder how well he might mesh with starting safety Sean ... [link]

Redskins Like Landry

... Redskins Like Landry In today s Washington Post there s speculation the Redskins might take LSU safety LaRon Landry with the sixth-overall pick in this weekend s draft. Landry fills an obvious need in the secondary, but some scouts think he s too much like Sean Taylor for it to work. The other issue is that drafting Landry doesn t address the defensive line. Louisville DT Amobi Okoye is also mentioned as a possible target, but all of this assumes Washington doesn t trade up (for Calvin Johnson!) or down (for more warm bodies). Skins could grab Okoye or Landry?

Landry and defensive tackle Amobi Okoye (Louisville) are the most likely choices should the Redskins retain the sixth pick -- the team could still trade up or down. Executives and scouting directors from numerous other NFL teams said privately that they, too, agreed with that assessment of Landry but wondered if he is the best fit for the Redskins.

Redskins' Draft Hype: Dont get too excited...

... . This will surely begin a very miserable week for Redskins fans and will be an ominous precursor for the season to come. What are they gonna tell us this year? Do they want Landry or Okoye? Do they want to have even less picks so they can trade up for Calvin Johnson, a wide receiver, who would fit well on a team that already has at least 4 signed for the next 4 years? Who knows. Yes, this is a week of misery, not because we know what they will do but because the history of this franchise's draft picks for the last 5 years tells us whatever they do, it will usually not work out.

Arguments against LaRon Landry

... What I would disagree with Joe T. on is that Landry is somehow harmed by the presence of Taylor. We've talked about the opposite being true, that Sean might be asked to bring the younger player along developmentally, but I don't know if I buy the general argument that players such as Landry and Taylor are best in small doses. Big hitting guys (who happen to be decent in coverage) cause dropped passes and fumbles, and no defense ever complains about generating either. Referring back to the original Post article:

... Now any 19-year old player should give an NFL GM pause so we can argue all day whether Amobi Okoye or Alan Branch would have been good picks at number six. I would not have used the sixth pick. If there was some sucker out there that wanted to go all
