The Griddle: Perhaps he didn't look good in powder blue
Baseball Toaster — TSN of Canada is reporting that the Toronto Blue Jays have released designated hitter Frank Thomas . Thomas complained to the media yesterday after being benched in favor of Matt Stairs. Thomas was batting .167 with 3 home runs in 60 at bats. No word if David Ortiz (.141 with 2 home runs) has decided to just keep quiet too. (From the Dodger Thoughts comments)

ESPN.com: Toronto releases Big Hurt after slow start
BBTF's Baseball Primer NewsblogESPN.com: Toronto releases Big Hurt after slow start A day after getting benched and openly complaining about playing time, Blue Jays designated hitter Frank Thomas was released by Toronto, according to a report from TSN of Canada on Sunday. On Saturday, Thomas was livid after getting benched in favor of Matt Stairs and being told by manager John Gibbons he can expect further cuts to his playing time. Thomas was hitless in his past 13 at-bats and has gone 4-for-35 since homering in three straight games April 5-8. Frank Thomas is released in favor of Matt Stairs. Nope, still ...

Big Hurt Cut
Hot Foot — According to ESPN.com, the Blue Jays have released 1B/DH Frank Thomas.  Earlier this week, Thomas complained about a lack of ABs, claiming that they were benching him so they would not have to pick up his option for next year which would have kicked in if he reached 376 ABs.  Call me nuts, but a power hitting 1B…just some food for thought. Big Hurt Available
Mets Prospects Minors Blog | MetsProspectus.com"The Toronto Blue Jays released slumping designated hitter Frank Thomas Sunday, cutting the 19-year veteran loose one day after he was angry for being taken out of the lineup." ...Frank Thomas is just a healthy version of Moises Alou. If he was able to play the field, which he is not, he would be perfect for this team (old, bad defensive slugger, who is not white [

Frank Thomas Released
Rotoprofessor — Wow, that did not take long at all.  According to ESPN (click here for the article), a day after announcing that he would not be starting, the Toronto Blue Jays decided to release Frank Thomas all together.  I know he had been struggling (0 for his last 13, 4 for 35), but like I said yesterday, early season struggles had plagued Thomas over the past few seasons.  I have a tough time believing that he was not going to get things going, but I guess you never know.  Still, I would anticipate an AL team grabbing him fairly quickly, so do not drop him in any format at this ...

Alou Makes Rehab Start

Big Hurt feelings
Sox Machine — Big Hurt feelings Frank Thomas is currently out of a job : [image] Thomas said that the Jays were sitting him early in order to prevent him from reaching a plate appearance threshold and thus triggering an option. This would be the second time a hitch in his contract has been used against him , and the second time it's been done by somebody who doesn't possess the best people skills. (Although this is the first time by somebody who looks like Stanley Spadowski.) Frank's lifetime average is .302, so there's at least one advantage in hanging it up now. ...

Game 19: The Hex-stein Lives On
The Daily Fungo – Detroit Tigers Baseball: Yesterday and Today — ... showed no sign of turning the corner for the Tigers and allowed five runs on eight hits in five innings of work to take the loss. Clete Thomas led the Tigers offense with three hits and two RBI, while Miguel Cabrera added a double and a RBI. The Blue Jays’ David Eckstein, a thorn in the Tigers’ side during the 2006 World Series, hit a three-run homer which proved to be the difference. So much for hoping the Frank Thomas Saga would distract the Blue Jays. ...

The Battle of Eggs and Omlets
Ghostrunner on First — ... Sure, everyone said the right things in the aftermath. But you know what really happened, don't you? You think I do anything "mutually?" I don't even know what consent means. It is my way or the fuck you way. ...

Late April Duck Snorts
Jockish — ... THE BIG HURT IS NOW HURTING FOR WORK: This past weekend, DH Frank Thomas was released by the Toronto Blue Jays. And just like the way he left the team that drafted him, the Chicago White Sox, there’s no love lost. General Manager J.P. Ricciardi cut bait on the disgruntled and all-around cranky Thomas after a slow start lead to his benching in favor of more productive options, like professional hitter Matt Stairs and slugging catcher Rod Barajas. Baseball Prospectus’ Joe Sheehan wrote an ill-informed rant complaining about this move which I ...

SportsHubLA — ... 6. Milwaukee Brewers (11-8) (+1): Is Eric Gagne really worthy of being a closer anymore? 7. Cleveland Indians (7-12) (-4): C.C. Sabathia has a 13.50 ERA. Yikes! 8. New York Mets (10-8) (+2): Carlos Delgado is officially in a slump. 9. Chicago White Sox (11-7) (+2): He may be 37, but Jim Thome can still mash with the best of them. 10. Toronto Blue Jays (10-10) (-6): The Frank Thomas era in Toronto is over. 11. Los Angeles Dodgers (8-11) (-5): Joe Torre has been shuffling the line-up more than a deck of cards in a poker tournament. 12. Atlanta Braves (10-9) (+1): ...

Big Lugs and Small Sample Sizes
The Futility Infielder — Big Lugs and Small Sample Sizes Watching Tuesday night's Yankees-White Sox game in an attempt to keep my mind off the Pennyslvania Democractic primary results, I saw Jason Giambi homer to left field in the second inning. Giambi came into the game hitting .109/.288/.283 in 46 at-bats, and more ominously, just .174/.323/.366 in 213 at-bats going back to last May 1. In the wake of Frank Thomas' unceremonious release from the Blue Jays, Steven Goldman ...

Blue Jays Release Frank ThomasU.S.S. Mariner
The Jays released The Big Hurt today, rather than be on the hook for a $10 million vesting option in 2009. No other team was going to pick up that contract either, so just eating the deal outright was the Jays only real alternative, since Thomas had no interest in being a part time player. I wrote up a longer post on this over at fangraphs. Should the M’s pursue Thomas? It’s ...
