It's hard to imagine this fiasco ending well for Milwaukee.  Mullin should be asking for the moon in exchange for taking Yi off their hands at this point.

Out of curiosity, what would you guys think to be a reasonable trade for Yi? Can Mullin force them into an awful deal this early in the game? I'm nothing close to a fan of giving up Wright or Monta for him.

Doesn't Brandan Wright for Yi get this done?

Yeah--realistically, I think Yi-for-Wright would make the most sense (restoring things to the way they should have gone down on draft night).  I'm not sure that anything else is really feasible under the CBA, anyway.

Is Yi better than Wright? More intriguing, certainly, but I think a lot of that is because he's unknown. Wright's definitely a better athlete, and, while he doesn't have the same shooting or ballhandling ability, grades out as a better finisher and bigger defensive presence. I don't doubt that Yi's a better fit for Nellie, but will he be here by the time Yi comes around.

I was impressed by Yi's skills in summer league, but I couldn't see a huge difference between him and Jason Smith. Both have the same strengths and weaknesses, although Yi definitely has more potential.

In the end, I guess I just don't see what Yi brings that the team doesn't already have a ton of. (Seattle could have made this all so much easier by taking Yi at #5 where he should have gone.)

        Is Yi better than Wright?
Good question.  Yi wasn't great in Vegas, and he could very well turn out to be a flop.  I think you hit the nail on the head, though--he's more intriguing, which is part of the enjoyment for fans.  Plus, some of us have probably been brainwashed by GSoM's year-long Yi Movement.

It would be an easier decision if Wright weren't so raw himself. It boils down to the fact that, given the timeframes on when they'll both be ready and the skills they have, Wright more obviously improves the team at his peak. It also helps that I really like Wright and didn't sour on him at all after watching for a whole season at UNC. There's a reason everyone said he'd go 3rd during the season.

And I do like Yi. The Movement affects us all.

... news, this should be taken with a pound of salt. Nonetheless: The Beijing Times reports that Yi's Chinese club team -- the Guangdong Tigers -- will block the forward from joining the Bucks. "This is not -- as media reports have said -- because Milwaukee, as a city with very few Chinese people, is not good for Yi's commercial development," [Guangdong boss] Chen [Haitao] said. "Rather we want to find a team suitable for Yi's growth. That's the root of the problem."I fail to see how Milwaukee isn't a great opportunity in terms of Yi's basketball growth. China Worried About Yi's Playing Time

... Now the Chinese National team is coming out with another stupid excuse as to why Yi should not join the Milwaukee Bucks, that being that the Bucks have too many tall people. There 'point' if you can take it as legit is that their #1 concern is development of Yi for Team China and that if he was to play for the Milwaukee Bucks that he would have a difficult time garnering playing time and this would in fact stunt his growth. ...

That became even more likely today, as Yi’s Chinese team confirmed that they will block his move to the United States. Sure, because Yi's growth will be much better playing for Guandong in the CBA (the Chinese Basketball Association, not the tougher Continental Basketball Association). Dodging the Draft
Published 7/18/2007 by TexSUN <info@brightsideofthesun.com> at Bright Side Of The Sun: Front Page Posts
ESPN is reporting that Yi Jianlian will "definitely not" play for the Bucks, by order of his national team. You know, it's probably a good thing I'm running short on time tonight. Otherwise, fresh on the heels of a week spent watching a summer league filled with guys who would happily be the 12th man on worst team ever for a chance to play in the NBA, this news would likely inspire a lengthy tirade that's best left unwritten. This isn't even the Suns' guy after all, so I guess it isn't my place to get all worked up about it. However, the Suns were looking at him prior to the draft, and there's the slightest possibility he could have been their selection had Atlanta's pick fallen their way. Which begs the question, would he have even played here if he'd been selected? It seems the claim from his team back home now is that there were concerns that Yi wouldn't get enough playing time on the Bucks to d ...

Not on China’s Hot List
Published 7/18/2007 by MrVegas at Garbage Minutes
I find great irony in the fact that Yi Jianlian, a player from a communist country, is taking a more capitalistic approach to one of the more communist traditions of American sports. Yi and his representatives are attempting to hold the Milwaukee Bucks hostage claiming Yi will not play for the Bucks, so the Bucks best option is to either trade Yi or expect him to return to China.  Why does Yi s camp take this stance do you ask? Because the Bucks excessive amount of tall players will hinder Yi s ability to develop for the Chinese National Team, according to Chen Haitao, owner of Yi s former (and possibly current) team in China. I have a couple of opinions on this matter. First, playing in the NBA against better competition than the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) will encourage Yi s development, not hinder it, as long as Yi stops acting like a spoiled brat and puts the effort into learning. The NBA has better competi ...

What The Chinese Goverment Wants, The Chinese Goverment Gets
Published 7/18/2007 by Marco at Just Call Me Juice
... I love the Chinese government. When these guys want something done, they get it done. They do not fuck around with anything. Take for instance these stories from today. First off, it appears as if Yi won't be bringing his lawn chair-posting game to Milwaukee, as the Chinese government does not see it fit that he goes to Milwaukee because it's lack of Chinese citizens and because well, it's Milwaukee. The Bucks have now basically wasted the 6th pick of the draft and Yi has sealed his fate to become a gigantic bust, but whatever the Chinese government wants, it gets. ...
