First domino falls at top of the draft
Published 4/22/2008 at ESPN.com - NFL Nation - Blog
... The Dolphins' reported agreement with Michigan's Jake Long removes some suspense from the top of the draft while giving St. Louis first crack at the top defensive player on their board, should the Rams choose to go in that direction. That scenario played out yesterday during a conference-call mock draft with veteran NFL beat reporters. We gave Glenn Dorsey to the Rams in the second spot, a scenario that left the Falcons with a potentially difficult decision in the third spot: Atlanta could take the lower-risk route of drafting a lineman -- Chris Long ...

Jake Long to the 'Fins

According to ESPN, the Dolphins have agreed to terms with Jake Long and will select him with first overall pick. This has a nice effect for the Patriots, as the chances that one of Sedrick Ellis, Glenn Dorsey, Darren McFadden, or Matt Ryan will be there have increased exponentially. Each of those four have serious interest from suitors outside the top ten, who are willing to part with first-day picks in order to grab the guy they want. ...

Should the Bears trade up?
Published 4/22/2008 by Rickhouse at Tremendous Upside Potential
... What the decision should come down to is how the organization feels about Vanderbilt’s Williams and Jeff Otah of Pitt. We already know Michigan tackle Jake Long is going #1 overall to Miami, and Virginia’s Albert and Boise State’s Ryan Clady are expected to be gone by 14. Either Williams or Otah will likely be gone as well, meaning the best the Bears can hope for is whoever is left. Of course, a team could trade in front of the Bears to grab the last of the elite tackles, leaving the Bears with nothing. ...

In a development that has taken place remarkably early, the Miami Dolphins have agreed to terms with offensive tackle Jake Long on a 5-year, $57.5 million contract ($30 million guaranteed), which will make Long the first overall pick in Saturday's NFL Draft. The Dolphins have been negotiating with Long for over a week; the team, headed up by Bill Parcells, had also been rumored to be interested in defensive ends Chris Long (Virginia) and Vernon Gholston (Ohio State). ...

... . . . The Miami Dolphins select University of Michigan offensive tackle, Jake Long.
It’s official. The first bit of suspense for the NFL draft has been buzzkilled, now that Bill Parcells has signed the former Michigan standout as his first overall selection in 2008. It’s a pretty wise selection, if you ask me, given what is out there and what’s safest with the first pick. He’s huge, he’s quick, and he reminds a lot of people of Joe Thomas, one of the best rookies from last year’s crop. The problem is, when you mention big and ...

But that doesn’t mean the St. Louis Rams, who hold the second pick, can start negotiating with Chris Long/Vernon Gholston/etc. Despite the fact media outlets have been reporting all day that the Rams are now “on the clock,” the team isn’t allowed to negotiate with or sign a prospect until after it has made the pick at 3:11 p.m. Saturday (are there betting props for the time of picks? A lot of them had great college careers, too, plus they've performed well at the next level. Long could be the next Orlando Pace or he could be the next Robert Gallery. No one knows. But Upshaw thinks he should be paid like the best of the best and let the Dolphins live with the consequences either way. ...
