The first rule of NBA trades is "Follow the money." It's the only way to make sense of a seemingly lopsided deal, such as today's swap that reportedly sent Richard Jefferson to the Spurs for Kurt Thomas , Fabricio Oberto and Bruce Bowen , pending league approval. For starters, understand that ...

Acquiring Richard Jefferson: Hardly a No-Brainer
ESPN.com - TrueHoop —
Assuming this Richard Jefferson for Bruce Bowen, Fabricio Oberto and Kurt Thomas trade becomes official, the Spurs will, no doubt, be declared the big winners not only of this trade, but possibly of the whole week (which includes the draft) and the off-season. The Bucks are seen as having done well simply by getting rid of Jefferson's inflated contract. Yet there is a lot to recommend the move by the Spurs. As John Hollinger points out, Jefferson has the ability to make the corner 3, which tends to be available in the Spurs' offense. He alleviates the scoring pressure from the Spurs' big three. He can also supply some of the slashing that comes from an ...

ESPN’s Chad Ford is reporting the Milwaukee Bucks have agreed to send Richard Jefferson to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for Bruce Bowen, Kurt Thomas and Fabricio Oberto. I like the trade for both teams. Bowen, Thomas and Oberto are entering the final year of their contracts, with Oberto and Bowen’s contracts non-guaranteed, which will clear about $7 million from Milwaukee’s payroll this season, plus an additional $15 million in 2011. The cost-cutting move should give the Bucks enough cap space to retain Ramon Sessions and Charlie Villanueva. I don’t think Jefferson is enough to push the Spurs over the Lakers, or the Rockets or Nuggets for ...

... Hollinger: Everyone wins. John Hollinger writes that the Bucks are effectively trading RJ for CV and Sessions, which makes sense but was probably avoidable. I don't think the Bucks really want to bring back CV anyway for what it's worth, and the Johnson deal (which hadn't happened when Hollinger wrote his article) lends some support to that. Note that the cap number he cites was before the Johnson deal sliced off $1.76 million. ...

... the Spurs would have been Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and oodles of cap space. Who would that have become? Somebody! Potentially somebody really special. And that's the player the Spurs silently included in this deal today.
and
It may well work out beautifully. But this is not a steal, nor is it a no-brainer. It's one of the highest-risk moves the Spurs have made in the Tim Duncan era.
I give you John Hollinger:
That said, the Spurs took a ...

If you liked the direction the Bucks were headed in last season in Scott Skiles and Richard Jefferson's first seasons in Milwaukee, yesterday's trade isn't going to make you run out and buy Bucks tickets.
If you think the Bucks should have been rebuilding last season and trying to deal Michael Redd rather than adding new stars to a bad mix, you've got to wonder if Bucks GM Hammond and Scott Skiles were serious in the comments today about the trade. This is about winning they tell us, and take issue with national media labelling the trade "a salary dump."
Hammond would like to refer to the trade as a ...
