... But all of that is a big, juicy rationalization. Ankiel is now covered in the same cloud that envelops Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and nearly every other prodigious home run hitter of the last decade. It makes the feel-good story of the 2007 season fugazy and further erodes the trust and belief we can have in athletes doing amazing things because of their natural ability. As Will Leitch, Deadspin editor and perhaps the world's biggest Ankiel fan, put it this morning, ...
Rick Ankiel, from anti-Bonds to Antichrist
The Postmen // A Sports Blog // Chicago, IL. —
... But how much did HGH help Ankiel? How authentic is his performance on the field right now? How much could steroids have helped Bonds? If both players did their cheating before the cheating was explicitly illegal, can you really be so maddened by either? We’ve already seen Cardinals fans go the way of Giants fans and ...
Ankiel's HGH Story Will Spur A Lot Of Interesting Takes
The Smittblog —
... for those that don't know, put together a great--if not a little depressing--read about the situation that I'd recommend anyone take a look at. His basic take was that while the fan inside him wants so badly to come up with various defenses for Ankiel, he knows that the unbridled joy that was "The Rick Ankiel" story has been deflated entirely. He won't condemn Ankiel for doing it (in fact he sympathizes with the kid for wanting so badly to get back to the bigs that he was willing to risk so much to do it), but he is also confronted with the realization that any of the lame defenses he makes on Ankiel's behalf echo those made on behalf of Bonds for the last 5 or 6 years. It's a troubling position to find oneself in and he deals with it in a refreshingly honest manner (I just realized that this is coming off as a complete ballwash of Leitch. For that I apologize. I just really enjoyed ...

... ith the amount of money at stake, it would be foolish to assume otherwise. Perhaps if we're concerned that our children will take to using PEDs in furtherance of their dreams of professional stardom, we could either encourage them to use their talents in other, more worthwhile ways, or at least maybe keep an eye or two on what they're doing to themselves.
I'm not sure there's anything wrong with this approach. These guys are great at baseball, but we all know they want to win and do as well as they can. Just like most everyone else, they saw a way to get better, and took it. Does that make Ankiel (or Bonds) a good guy? No, not in my mind...it makes them perhaps a bit overzealous, but when everyone else around you is using, you do what you have to. What bothers me is the fact that the sports public seems to be interested in pillorying (or maybe lynching) one of those two, while the other seems to be getting something of a free pass. Even the normally astute ...
Ankiel and HGH is why we need to lay off of Bonds, McGwire
Obscure Sports Quarterly —
... I still consider the Rick Ankiel comeback story a great one and will still continue to root for his success. Ankiel’s biggest fan, Will Leitch, admits that while the HGH in 2004 probably isn’t why Ankiel is playing so well now, we would be all over other players who were accused of this. ...

I Only Want To Hear From One Man...
STLSportsMag —
... , eloquently put this morning : "There was always an innocence to the hope; against all rational thought, we believed in Rick Ankiel because if you could believe in him, you could believe in anything. " So let's see human emotion, and let's see it now - before the Cardinals take the field in Arizona tonight. Let's see a public admission of guilt from Rick Ankiel himself, and his willingness to prove his current innocence in front of the world - if he is, in fact, clean. What Rick can do is help us all erase the negative connotations now associated with his name and prove that he's moved on with his life. Take a stand - a "that was then, this is now" stand. Just as badly as Rick wished we would all forget about his horrific decent into distress during the fall of 2001, we would like to forget about Rick's association with HGH in 2004. We want to talk about Rick's 2 HRs and 7 RBIs in ...
Rick Ankiel and HGH

... , he needs to come clean. But everyone should also note that he received HGH - which only helps heal, not make stronger or faster or quicker or your head grow - in 2004, which is before MLB banned the substance in 2005. ... and also for being linked to HGH in reports about 24 hours ago. This calling Ankiel 'Roy Hobbs' had us shaking our collective heads, as the true Natural in baseball since the season's beginning has been Josh Hamilton. Hamilton's OPS is .940, over a full season he'd have just less than 40 homeruns and 100 RBI. He plays phenomal defense and is a great guy. He's baseball's best story and tonight he just wrote another chapter for us all, while the imposter Hobbs (Ankiel) went 1 for 4 in the wake of his alleged HGH usage. ...

Rick Ankiel Afterthoughts: A Response to Deadspin
Hire Jim Essian —
... Last Friday, after the news that Rick Ankiel had been prescribed a 12-month supply of HGH during his 2004 recovery, Will “Emo” Leitch penned a completely ludicrous article about the incident entitled “What We Lost, And What We Never Had.” Look, I appreciate what Deadspin has done for blogging, particularly sports blogging. But the self-important attitude of the Deadspin writers and commentators reared its arrogant head again, as Leitch skewed the boneheaded actions of yet another mouthbreathing Cardinal to feed his own ego and, apparently, to practice some emo poetry. After the jump (why do bloggers say that?) is the article in full, with my own comments interspersed. ...
40 Reasons to Hate the Cardinals
Bugs & Cranks —
... ots of reasons to hate the Cardinals, but I thought I d only bother you with forty. 40. Tony LaRussa will do something completely fucking stupid just to confuse people into thinking he s smart. 39. Beer made from rice. 38. Scott Rolen s Midas touch. I despise giving awards on name basis, and Rolen has become the poster child for this. His cartilage-less knees have no range and his bat no pop, but he s probably going to walk away with his 8th Gold Glove. 37. Road Construction. 36. Tony LaRussa will inevitably bat the pitcher #8 at some point in the series, just to piss off logic. 35. David Eckstein s wife is hotter than yours 34. They re ruining Russell Branyan. With only 1 homer and 7 strikeouts in 17 ABs, they re trying to make Russell hit singles. Let the man be. 33. Skip Schumaker. I categorically hate all people named Skip. 32. The Missouri Compromise. Compromising sucks, learn to collaborate. 31. Even the most intelligent of Cardinals fans sometimes make ...
Pro Golfers to Be Tested For Drugs Starting in 2008
SPORTSbyBROOKS —
... : The LONDON GUARDIAN reports that starting in 2008, pros on the European Tour will be checked for illegal substances before they go out swinging. Players on the PGA Tour in the U.S. won't be needled until 2009. Suspicion of drug use has been aroused in recent months, especially after former champ Gary Player claimed that " at least 10 players and maybe more " were " on something " at this year's British Open. But dissension is already in the ranks. PGA people don't want to include every item on the list from by the World Anti-Doping Agency - specifically human growth hormone. They argue that HGH testing is still a work in progress, and if you can't find it, there's no point in banning it. Looks like Rick Ankiel has a new career option. ...

A Retraction and a Mea Culpa to Mr. Noah Lowry
Walkoff Walk —
... hand. Dr. Gordon Brody will perform Lowry's surgery, which is expected to be a mild procedure, by making a small incision and releasing the fascia -- akin to slicing a sausage casing -- around the forearm muscles.
See? No big deal. He's just having the casing sliced off of his sausa....holy crap, the blood just flowed out of my head. I'm feeling dizzy. Hold on one second.
...
Alright, I'm okay now. Hey Noah, wanna speed up the healing process? I hear HGH works wonders.
