... As for big Redbird bats, I don't need to mention much about converted pitcher Rick Ankiel (.272/.319/.573), who leads the PCL in home runs. 84 K's in 372 ABs to 24 walks and a .319 OBP indicates hacking tendencies, however. ... . He has also struck out 90 times and had a .314 on-base percentage. Ankiel made his major-league pitching debut at just 19 in late 1999. He won 11 games and struck out 194 in 175 innings as a rookie in 2000 and ended up starting the Cardinals' postseason opener that against Atlanta. But that is where things changed, as Ankiel became the first major-league pitcher to throw five wild pitches in one inning since 1890. He went on to throw nine wild pitches (read downfall section) in four innings during the 2000 playoffs and never seemed to be the same after that. Being in the NL and having to bat as a pitcher probably saved his career. Ankiel showed some consistency and power at the plate, batting .250 with two homeruns. We wish Ankiel all the best in his attempt back to the majors and we will be keeping an eye on his progress.
