Newsday: Rickey Henderson hired as Mets hitting coach It s Hitting-Coach-As-Scapegoat Day! The Mets will begin the season s second half with a dramatic change in their coaching staff, Newsday has learned. Rick Down is out as hitting coach, and Rickey Henderson is in. Down said that Willie Randolph informed him Wednesday night of the decision, and that he would be replaced by Henderson. A person familiar with the situation confirmed that Henderson, the future Hall of Famer who has never served as a coach, would take over as hitting coach. When asked whether Randolph offered an explanation, Down replied: Not really. Approach, I guess.

... BP in his first go at the major-league level, it'd be nice to give him a week to see if he doesn't go down in flames. Danny Richar will be fun to watch come September, although I do think Tadahito Iguchi still has a future on this team for no longer than a two-year deal. No. 5: Paul Konerko and Jim Thome. Konerko is slugging .656 since the start of June, and while it's too little, too late for this season, it could be worse. Paulie is still on the hook for $36 millon over the next three years, so the Sox couldn't afford a precipitous early decline in more ways than one. Konerko and Thome can easily disappear due to slumps or health issues, but if they're in the lineup, they combine to make more of a middle of the order than the Sox had in 2005. If Kenny Williams can provide some guys to get on base around them -- Fields and Gonzalez are a start, though not a permanent solution -- the offense can be tolerable. ********************* Two more hitting coaches were fired: The Mets ...
Coaching Change
Mets Fever —
... News Day is reporting that Hitting coach Rick Downs had been let go and Rickey Henderson has been hired to replace him. The offense was a disappointment for the entire first half of the season and more then just players struggling at the plate but the approach was horrible. This year's club became an undisciplined, free swinging team that made too many first pitch outs and never took any pitchers deep into a count to get them out of a game early. Henderson was one of the greatest lead off hitters ever and could have a huge impact on Reyes, Gotay, Milledge, Beltran and Gomez. On June 14, I suggested letting Downs go and hiring Henderson ( in that post I moved Hojo to hitting and Rickey to first base) in a post titled " ...

Mets Trusting Offence to the Man of Steal
MVN Outsider —
... The good news, according to Newsday, which broke the story late Wednesday night, is that Rickey Henderson is coming back to the Show. The kicker is that the Man of Steal is the new hitting coach for the New York Mets (for whom he’s been a special instructor the past couple of spring trainings and played a season and a half in 1999-2000), bumping incumbent Rick Down off staff and allowing Howard Johnson (once a feared Met bombardier and minor league manager) to remain on the coaching lines at first base. ...

Rickey Henderson Will Teach Mets Hitters To Be More Like Rickey Henderson
The Feed —
... How much will the new Mets hitting coach help the team keep their eyes on the prize? Rickey Henderson has been called many things, most of them Rickey Henderson, but never modest. Rickey's snatch catches were fun to watch but hardly something you'd want Rickey teaching other players. Rickey was accused of lackadaisacal play on more than one occasion, often when Rickey wasn't playing his best regardless of how the team was faring. There was the "I'm the greatest of all time" speech after Rickey set the record for career stolen bases and the card game that Rickey played with Bobby Bonilla during Game Six of the 1999 NLCS. And the whole third person thing, of course. ...
