Jimmy Rollins Takes NL MVP
Published 11/20/2007 by Mantlemurcer at My Pinstripes
Jimmy Rollins put his money where his mouth is. Rollins said the Phillies were THE team in the NL east back in Spring Training. After a horrible start, the Phillies caught a collapsing Mets team to capture the NL East title on the last weekend of the season. Rollins was one of the chief reasons and he was awarded moments ago with the NL MVP Award. ...
NL MVP: Jimmy Rollins Edges Matt Holliday for Back-to-Back Phillies MVPs
Published 11/20/2007 at FanIQ Blog
For the second straight year, the Philadelphia Phillies infield has a NL MVP. Jimmy Rollins edged Matt Holliday by 17 points, while Prince Fielder finished third.
Matt Holliday led the NL in 6 statistical categories, and played a critical role in the Rockies' ridiculous season ending record stretch. But the voters were more enamored with Rollins who became just the fourth player to reach the 20-20-20-20 club.
This was a surprise to me. I'd have voted for Holliday first, Fielder second and Rollins third. I'd argue Rollins is the 2nd or 3rd best player in his own infield.
Furthermore, what I find interesting is that it appears the voters ...

According to MLB.com, Jimmy Rollins has won the 2007 National League MVP Award. Matt Holliday came in second place.
The 17-point differential between Rollins and Holliday made the 2007 election the 20th closest in MLB history.
…ouch…i regrettably have to say that he talked a big game before the season started and backed it up…this certainly helps to kick a Mets fan when he is down, but i personally would have voted for Holliday who got the Rockies to the world series for the first time ever…
BREAKING NEWS: Fielder (and Holliday) robbed of MVP
Published 11/20/2007 by David Hannes at Brewers Bar
In yet another slap to the Milwaukee Brewers, Jimmy Rollins of the Phillies was named the NL MVP Tuesday.
Huh?
Just before the announcement, I looked at Rollins’ numbers versus Fielder’s–and Prince dominated in the three most important categories–HR’s, RBI’s, and OBP. Fielder’s numbers, respectively, were 50, 119, and .395; Rollins trailed with 30, 94, and .344. True, Rollins scored more runs, 139 to 109, but and had 41 SB’s to Fielder’s 2.
As to true value to their respective teams, Fielder was the only Brewer to be fairly consistent throughout the season; Ryan Braun contributed nothing to the ...

MLB: Jimmy Rollins nabs NL MVP Award PHILLY PARTY TONIGHT! PHILLY PARTY TONIGHT! But Philadelphia shortstop Jimmy Rollins, all 5-foot-8 of him, stood taller than Colorado’s Matt Holliday and Milwaukee’s Prince Fielder, as the Baseball Writers’ Association of America announced the results of its final individual award given out this season. Of the 32 ballots submitted by two writers in each league city, Rollins was listed first on 16, second on seven, third on four, fourth on four and fifth on one for a total of 353 points. Jimmy Rollins Edges Matt Holliday for NL MVP
Published 11/21/2007 by Maury Brown at The Biz of Baseball :: Business of Sports Network
While the AL MVP selection of Alex Rodriguez was thought to be a lock, the selection of the NL MVP for 2007 was going to be more of a guess. That guess is now over, with Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins winning this year's award, edging out the Rockies Matt Holliday by 17 points, the ninth closest vote since the current format was adopted by the BBWAA in 1938. (To see a complete historical listing of MVPs, and much more, register on The Biz of Baseball, and log in to see our special “Members Only” section) Milwaukee’s Prince Fielder, ...

... November 21 2007 Jimmy Rollins nipped Matt Holliday to win the NL MVP. Ryan Howard finished fifth and Utley eighth. Rowand got one eighth-place vote and finished tied for 22nd. With all due respect to everyone's WARP, VORP, FORP and DORP, the voters got it right. Whether or not you agree depends a lot on what you think of Jimmy Rollins' defense and his statement that the Phils were the team to beat in the division and the way he backed it up. Both were pretty impressive. The award is subjective. If it wasn't there wouldn't need to be a vote. We could just look at ...
Lipstick On A Reliever

I'm going to start to call Omar Minaya the Avon Lady. Think about it, only the Avon Lady could find enough lipstick in the world to make the proverbial pig known as Guillermo Mota look attractive to somebody. I don't know how Omar did it, but he turned Mota into not only a serviceable ballplayer, but a starting catcher! Minaya flipped Mota into Johnny Estrada, who's very similar to Paul Lo Duca in that he has the ability to be a .300 hitter from the catching position. Of course, the one National League who had a lower percentage throwing out runners than Lo Duca and even Yorvit Torrealba: you guessed it, Estrada. But I look at it this way, Estrada's weak arm ...

Wagner Does His Part to Nudge Mets-Phillies Feud
Published 7/29/2008 by TheBigLead at The Big Lead
Missed this Friday, but it’s still worth talking about: When closers trash talk.
.. Billy Wagner, who was asked after the Mets’ 3-1 victory if he was any more excited than normal to face Rollins as the tying run in the ninth inning.
“Not really,” Wagner replied. “I mean, it’s Jimmy Rollins, not Barry Bonds.”
Assuming Rollins - worth noting he was the NL MVP last season - isn’t benched when the Mets travel to Philly for a two-game set Aug. 26 and 27th, it should be fun. And perhaps we should add this: Rollins is 0-for-9 against Wagner in his career.
