Ron Mahay: Most Under-Appreciated AL Pitcher Links1
The most underrated pitcher in the American League used to be an outfielder. That’s Ron Mahay, reliever for the Kansas City Royals. Let’s pause for a moment and give the man some credit. Mahay got a cup of coffee with the Red Sox as an outfielder – as a replacement player actually. His minor league offensive career can be best described as no power, no average, no speed: .246/.312/.340 in ... [link]

Couldn't agree more.  Mahay has some balls.

Wakefield is also under-appreciated, especially given his salary.

I feel like middle relievers are always underappreciated.  They can frequently be what separates a good team from a very good team and it's not like they're making the big salaries.  Mahay is one of many unsung heroes in this league.

I think the most underappreciated players are usually utility guys.  Guys who play good defense, maybe pinch run here and there, and are willing to do whatever they can to help out the team.  As a sox fan, I remember enjoying watching Mike Benjamin play that role with the Red Sox for a while.  He could play any infield position and was happy with his role, even when he wasn't making as much money or playing as much as everyone else on the field.

another good outing for Mahay the other day.  If it weren't for Soria, he could possibly be looking at an all-star appearance.

... If we're talking about relievers, Ron Mahay may well become a target.  I'll admit, this Dugout Central piece has him correctly pegged as "The Most Under-Appreciated..."  I not only had forgotten about him, I'm not sure I ever knew he signed with the Royals.  The Royals will almost certainly make him available, and he's got a reasonable (for a reliever) deal that goes through 2009. ...
