I’m pretty sure I’ve touched on the subject of high home run totals with low OPS+ figures before, but watching Ryan Howard with the Phillies tonight, it’s worth talking about again. Howard hit his 23rd homer of the season earlier tonight against the Mets, but entered the game with an OPS+ of just 101, meaning that his overall production is just a tick above average. Phillies Extend Lidge

Lidge’s contract runs about the same length as some of the other core players: Chase Utley is signed through 2013, Jimmy Rollins is signed through 2011, Ryan Howard is under control (arbitration) until after the 2011 season, and Cole Hamels is under control until after the 2012 season. So, the Phillies should be competitive at least for the next two or three years.
