Mets To Try To Trade For Bullpen Help

Decisions, Decisions
Let's Go Tribe! —
... Rodriguez and Fuentes are probably the best long-term bets, but the Indians have no chance at Rodriguez (asking for a 5/$75M contract), and signing Fuentes at his asking price of 3/$30M would fill a large portion of their offseason budget. That leaves Wood and Hoffman as the two options left that would allow the Indians to also make major improvements elsewhere on their roster. Signing Hoffman to a one-year contract, for instance, wouldn't affect their ability to sign Orlando Hudson. ...
Mets will shop for cheaper alternative to K-Rod, Fuentes
Eli's MLB Rumors —
The New York Mets remain interested in the free-agent closers Francisco Rodríguez and Brian Fuentes, but they will continue to scour the trade market for relievers before engaging in substantive discussions with either pitcher, according to two people in baseball with knowledge of their strategy. While General Manager Omar Minaya has had only preliminary conversations with the agents for Rodríguez and Fuentes, he has had continuing discussions with at least four teams about their relievers. Minaya has had discussions about José Valverde of the Houston Astros, Huston Street of the Colorado Rockies, J. J. Putz of the Seattle Mariners and Bobby Jenks ...
A Lazy Sunday After Giving Thanks
The DiaTribe —
... On the closer front, unless the Mets are REALLY trying to freak out K-Rod and his agent, forcing them to accept fewer years and fewer dollars with some smoke screens, here’s the weekly piece from the NY papers (this “time” it’s the “Times”…ba dum dum) on how the Mets will look for cheap closers before looking at K-Rod and Fuentes. ...
Just what I wanted to hear!
Straight Flushing —
Jack Curry: In addition to Minaya’s trade targets, the Mets are also evaluating the free agents Kerry Wood and Trevor Hoffman because they will be cheaper to sign than Rodríguez or Fuentes. Rodríguez will pursue a five-year, $75 million contract, and Fuentes could ask for a three-year deal for at least $30 million. A 5yr/$75m contract for a relief pitcher is just bananas, in this or any other environment. Provided this story is actually true and not just part of the media strategy for the negotiation of a catastrophic free agent signing, I'm glad to hear that Omar thinks so too.
