... Mark Cuban defends the leaving the bench rule, and thinks officials should be able to use instant replay as support in making unsportsmanlike conduct calls -- which sounds smart to me, as those fouls already hold up the game for discussion.

... yesterday's post concerning the suspensions in the Suns-Spurs NBA playoff series , I've got a few reactions I want to pass along, first, from Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban : First, let me go on the record as saying that in the event that a vote comes up to change the rules about suspensions for players leaving the bench, I will vote against changing it. Why ? Because its incredibly simple to educate players about the rule. Its a rule they fully understand and they understand the consequences of violating the rule. That makes the NBA stronger because it removes uncertainty. Can it result in a game(s) being impacted , yes. However, that impact results from an action a player knew violated the rules and was a mistake. There is no uncertainty about it. All they had to do was not leave the bench. I actually think that more rules need to be iron clad like the "don't leave the bench rule". Whenever we can remove discre

... I know the NBA is not perfect, and you guys have read plenty from me disagreeing with the NBA about a lot of topics, but there comes a time when enough is enough. Regardless of how I feel about the suspensions that Amare and Diaw served — for what it’s worth, I’m in complete agreement with Mark Cuban on all of this that the suspension rule is a good one — I’m letting it go. And so should you.

... *You can argue all day about whether the rule needs to be changed, but as you well know by now, we agree with Mark Cuban - the rule is good; the rule works; the rule does exactly what it’s supposed to.

... Furthermore the NBA worked Double OT to make sure that video of the Knicks-Nuggets brawl last year was pulled from YouTube and other video sharing websites as quickly as possible. The thug culture clearly isn't the image the NBA wants to portray and Stern's suits for scratches crusade is even further evidence of that fact in case anybody had any doubts. Mark Cuban is right, when you allow for exceptions and "spirits of the rule" to reign supreme, you take the teeth out of the rule and you end up solving nothing.
