I used the ZiPS projections for 2008 and SG’s quite useful RunDMB program , cranked up the USSM Labs Comp-u-matik 2000, and went at it. Then I put together a likely M’s lineup, cheated a ... [link]

I decided to look at this in a lot more depth. I used the ZiPS projections for 2008 and SG’s quite useful RunDMB program, cranked up the USSM Labs Comp-u-matik 2000, and went at it. Then I put together a likely M’s lineup, cheated a little by turning Betancourt’s defensive rating up, and ran a hundred seasons. ...The division favorite was not the Angels but the torn-down ...

... U.S.S. Mariner ran the 2008 season 100 times, and the M's, surprisingly, sucked.  Even more surprisingly, the A's won the division more often than the Angels, and the Rangers were about as good as the M's.

USS Mariner: A’s to win the AL West?
Published 2/12/2008 at BBTF's Baseball Primer Newsblog
USS Mariner: A’s to win the AL West? The division favorite was not the Angels but the torn-down Athletics, 47% to 42%, and Texas won the division almost as often as the M’s. The A’s-Angels thing is as much a shock as anything. General analyst-on-TV-or-radio seems to be that it’s all about the M’s-Angels, but Oakland fields the best pitching/defense combination in the AL and their offense is decent too. Also, check out the follow-up article: ...

Links Joe McEwing for Hall of Fame! Gary Thurman featured on a blog dedicated to the 1988 Topps set. Lots of memories looking at these, since I got a complete set of '88 Topps for Christmas that year. USS Mariner simmed the AL West 100 times and ... the A's won the division the most? The Mariners Mirage

... The 88-win scenario stands in stark opposition to USS Mariner's recent simulated season, which had the team at 77-85. Of course, that simulation also put the A's on top of the division.

Catfish Stew: Adjusting PECOTA to Make the A's Win

... , and ended up with the A's winning the division more than any other team. Obviously, something was screwy there, right? Yes, ZiPS doesn't really try very hard to accurately predict playing time, and Diamond Mind has a mind of its own with regards to playing time, as well, so that outcome alone is nothing for A's fans to excited about. BP's PECOTA, on the other hand, does try to predict playing time, and they just came out with their ...
