Cubs Rumors: Rafael Furcal
OUT OF RIGHT FIELD —
According to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times, the Cubs are interested in acquiring Rafael Furcal via Free Agency. Rafael Furcal only played 36 games due to injury this past season. The switch hitting shortstop batted .333 vs. the Cubs this year in the NLDS. Before the 2006 season, the Cubs pursued Furcal when he was a free agent. Furcal signed with the Dodgers after seemingly using the Cubs just to raise the Dodgers price. ...

The Ryan Dempster Era Will Continue
The Cub Reporter (TCR) | A Chicago Cubs Blog —
... It's being picked up by multiple news sources that the Ryan Dempster Experience will call Chicago home for the next four years. It sounds like it might be for a total of $52M a year or $13M on average. That's a pretty good deal if he pitches like he did last year, not so much if he pitches like 2001-2003. For what was out there though and for how much the Cubs and Dempster seem to like each other, it sounds like the right deal. He really did have a fantastic 2008 season. His 152 ERA+ was good for third best in the NL ...
Dempster Returns to Chicago
Chuckie Hacks —
Ryan Dempster has re-signed with the Cubs. The deal is reported to be 4 years and $52 million. Dempster has been rewarded handsomely for his excellent 2008 performance. My gut reaction is that the money sounds about right (average of $13 m per year) but the length of the deal might be a year too long, if I'm a Cubs fan. But I suppose that's the market for pitchers like Dempster. I'll be honest, that guy shocked me last year - I kept waiting for him to hit a wall but he didn't. We'll see if it continues, but the Cubs got their guy.

The case FOR Ryan Dempster
GoatRiders of the Apocalypse —
Kurt ain't gonna like this, because even 4x12 isn't gonna be enough.
It is 4 x 13, according to the SunTimes.
Which is, from the top of my head, a little less than what Jake Peavy stands to make through his contract. But, Kurt and others are yelling right now, YOU (me) said Jake Peavy is an ACE, and Ryan Dempster is NOT.
Yep, I said that. I meant it, too. And I still do. I most certainly think, even with Dempster back in the fold, that there is still room for Peavy. I could certainly go to war next ...

... The Cubs’ roster went a little further towards solidifying today with Ryan Dempster signing for an estimated $50-52 million four-year deal. The Sun-Times Gordon Wittenmyer reports it here. GW also mentions continuing interest in a one-year Randy Johnson deal (if you were Lou Piniella penciling in “Jason Marquis” one more time you wouldn’t think it so crazy) and possibly Rafael Furcal from the Dodgers. The hold-up in the Dempster deal was time and money issues, similar to what sent Kerry Wood packing (finally). ...
