The National Hockey League (NHL) today announced a marketing alliance with the Champions Hockey League (CHL), the newly formed European club championship under the authority of the International Ice Hockey Federation. The CHL began play on October 8, 2008 in 12 European markets. Based on early success, the pan-European league is already scheduled to expand to 22 markets for next season. Following the NHL's participation in September's Victoria Cup, a pre-season tournament in Bern, Switzerland which featured the New York Rangers and two CHL clubs, the two leagues began discussing further cooperation on various marketing initiatives which has led to the new alliance. How do you say, Meadowlark Lemon in Chinese? The NBA has signed a muli-year deal with the Harlem Globetrotters that looks to grow the NBA’s presence internationally. The deal excludes Canada, the U.S. and Mexico As reported by the SportsBusiness Journal: Financial terms of the five-year deal were not disclosed but the partnership will begin during the NBA’s All-Star Week in Phoenix, where the Globetrotters are slated to participate in all-star-related activities. There may be a recession, but the National Hockey League didn’t feel its effects on the first major shopping days of the Holiday season. The NHL reports that online sales, through shop.nhl.com were up 67 percent from Black Friday and up 10 percent for Black Monday from this time last year. Top selling items, so far for the league, include third jerseys by the Flyers, Bruins, and Penguins, NHL Winter Classic merchandise, and DVDs.
