Hazy Sabes of Winter
El Lefty Malo — The Hot Stove is kicking out a lot of smoke; fire has yet to be confirmed. But here’s where things stand. The Giants put one reliever smartly in the fold by signing Jeremy Affeldt early to a well-regarded deal. If Brian Sabean sticks to his guns, Bobby Howry or another set-up guy will follow soon. Throw in a few non-roster invites and the homegrown guys, and the bullpen mix will be ready for spring competition. UPDATE: Bingo! Henry Schulman has the Howry-to-Giants scoop. It’s a one-year deal, detes to follow. Score one for the Schulminator! The Edgar Renteria drama could play out ...

Giants Sign Bob Howry
MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com — According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants signed Bob Howry to a one-year deal.

Howry: Soon Is Now
El Lefty Malo — Well, that was fast. Bob Howry is the latest Giant, at the low, low price of $2.75 million for one year, far less than I expected him to command. If he throws like he did in 2006–2007, not 2008, this is a great move. Schulman talked to Sabean’s right-hand man Ron Schueler who said Howry was overworked last year. He’s up on the 40–man roster to the right, which gives the Giants two free spots. If they add Renteria, they’re nearly full. A trade is gonna come.

Bob Howry signs with Giants
Mets Tailgate — For the 2nd time in as many days, one of my player acquisition suggestions was taken by a team other than the Mets. The Giants have signed relief pitcher Bob Howry to a 1-year, $2.75 million contract. Pretty reasonable contract for both parties, all things considered. Coupled with their earlier signing of Jeremy Affeldt, the Giants have the makings of a decent bullpen. To counter this, the Mets made an earth-shattering signing of their own: re-signing Nelson Figueroa to a minor league deal.

6-4-2 — an Angels/Dodgers double play blog — ... links to San Francisco Chronicle blogger Henry Schulman, who says Howry's poor showing was due to overwork, "particularly in the number of times Howry warmed up in the bullpen without pitching." Giants Sign Bob Howry, Cubs Fans Laugh
FanHouse — by Matt Snyder Filed under: Cubs, Giants, NL Central, NL West, MLB TransactionsAccording to wire reports, Bob Howry is going to be paid $2.75 million to throw a baseball in 2009. Cubs fans everywhere are just happy it will be in a different uniform, as the San Francisco Giants are the ones who decided to waste money on the 35 year-old who hasn't made an adjustment in two years. Howry was brutal this season for the Cubs, compiling a 5.35 ERA and losing his late-innings role to an unpolished rookie, Jeff Samardzija. He didn't walk many, so his awful numbers were a byproduct of his ...
