As the word seeps forth from the general manager meetings about the Red Sox being thisclose to securing Curt Schilling’s farewell tour (the skinny: a possible single-year, $8 million base), the word seeps likewise that the Yankees are thisclose to keeping The Mariano for his likely final term in the ‘Stripes: three years, possibly $40 million to ensure he finishes as he started, as a Yankee.

As the GM Meetings enter the second day, some clubs are wrapping up players to contract extensions. Curt Schilling and the Boston Red Sox have reached a preliminary agreement, pending a physical. If Schilling passes, the deal is for one year and $8 million. Schilling has said that 2008 will be his final season as an MLB player.
