MLB announced yesterday that a total of 239 players on Opening Day rosters and disabled lists were born outside the 50 United States. Overall, 28.0 percent of the 855 Major League players (749 active 25-man roster players, 106 disabled or restricted Major League players) on March 30th rosters were born outside the 50 United States, representing 16 different countries or territories. Filed under: MLB BizIt's no secret that "America's Pastime" is actually played throughout the world, with every lineup in the game featuring players born outside the 50 states. Anecdotally speaking, it seems like there are more and more foreign players in the game every year, right? If you look at the numbers, though, it turns out that's not actually the case at all. According to The Biz of Baseball, 29.2% of players on Opening Day rosters in 2005 were foreign born; last year, that figure slightly dipped to 29%, and this year it's at 28%. What does this all mean?
