Bob Sheppard has officially announced his retirement from public address announcing after celebrating his 99th birthday and serving more than 50 years for the Yankees organization.
We all know his great legacy by now, as he has been announcing the Yankees lineups since April 17, 1951. His career has spanned ...

P.A. announcer Bob Sheppard calls it quits
lenNY's Yankees —
MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch recently spoke with longtime Yankees P.A. announcer Bob Sheppard and he announced that he has “no plans of coming back.” "Time has passed me by, I think. I had a good run for it. I enjoyed doing what I did. I don't think, at my age, I'm going to suddenly regain the stamina that is really needed if you do the job and do it well." Sheppard, 99 years old, has announced the starting lineups for over 50 years, and is known for his deep, succinct voice. Derek Jeter has said he will always step up to the plate to the sound of Sheppard’s voice, whether it is really his voice, or just a ...
Longtime Yankees/Giants P.A. Announcer Sheppard : I’m Done
Can't Stop The Bleeding —
Earlier this year, while recouperating from a bronchial infection, Yankee Stadium public address announcer Bob Sheppard denied his career was over, telling the New York Times’ Jack Curry, “I never said I’m not returning.” Yesterday, however, Sheppard said exactly that to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch :
“I have no plans of coming back,” Sheppard said on Wednesday in a telephone interview. “Time has passed me by, I think. I had a good run for it. I enjoyed doing what I did. I don’t think, at my age, I’m going to suddenly regain the stamina that is really needed if you do the job and do it ...
Happy Thanksgiving
Traveling Baseball Babes —
The TBB will not be posting much of a blog this week thanks to the holiday and Midnight Madness shopping that we will be partaking in this evening, but we did want to make sure that we wished our readers a warm, fun-filled Turkey Day. And of course, we (or rather, Lisa) did give you poll to vote on and it is our civic duty to report back the results of said poll. Lisa asked you which ...
One more reason to be thankful
The LoHud Yankees Blog —
To celebrate Thanksgiving, Sam and I listed a few reasons the Yankees should be thankful this offseason. At some point yesterday, it became obvious that we missed one.
Bob Sheppard.
In case you missed the news, the legendary voice of Yankee Stadium has officially retired. Our friend Bryan Hoch at mlb.com had the story yesterday. At 99 years old, Sheppard has no plans of coming back to the booth. It had become clear that he was unlikely to ever return to any sort of regular role, but we all seemed to be holding out hope.
“I was very much intimate with the action,” Sheppard told mlb.com. “I just felt, in one way, it’s even better to be here than to ...
Black Friday
Fack Youk —
Well, Black Friday has come and almost gone. Get your shopping done yet? I haven't. Why start today when there are still twenty eight shopping days until Christmas? And how about the irony in the biggest retail bonanza day of the year having appropriated the name originally given to the day in 1929 that the stock market crashed, ushering in the Great Depression? ...
Are the Boston Red Sox overrated?
Subway Squawkers —
Hope all of our readers had a happy Thanksgiving. I enjoyed seeing my Texas Longhorns hold on to beat Texas A & M, and continue their undefeated season. Not much going on in the baseball world right now, other than the retirement of Yankee announcer Bob Sheppard. And this tidbit: New York Post sports columnist Kevin Kernan stirred up a hornet's nest when he included the Boston Red Sox in his list of the most overrated teams in sports (Hat tip: Baseball Think Factory and Can't Stop the Bleeding for alerting me to this story.) Kernan ranked the Sox at No. 10, writing: Model franchise for stat geeks, but seems they can’t win a World Series ...
