 Baseball's 50 Most Valuable Players
Baseball ratings are up by more than 20 percent this season, and I think I know the reason why. Rarely has there been so much star talent accumulated on the diamond at any one time. In New York you have a veteran third baseman who shed years of being labeled as a choker with one 14-homer, 34-RBI month. In Minnesota you have a young catcher who accomplished the improbable by winning the batting tit [link]

... Nate Silver of Baseball Prospectus did his Top 50 Players list again, only this year it's at SportsIllustrated. Jason Bay falls from #9 to #35 this year, based mostly on his drop in VORP from 2005 to 2006.

... just start calling delay-of-game balls on Steve Trachsel types.) But here's what the Rockies' TV guys said, and for once I think they have a good point. It takes just as long for an MLB manager to come out and throw a hissy fit than it does for an NFL ref to just go put his head in the little replay peepshow box. So in circumstances like the Tulowitzki homer, replay would actually speed things along. (And make sure the correct call is made, which is at least a little important too.) But I suggest if baseball does go to replay, they introduce a tradition of managers going ahead with tirades during the review period, just to keep things interesting. The crew chief would watch the tirade and determine how amusing it was, then he would relay to the umpire checking the video whether to elongate or truncate his viewing time to reward or punish the manager for his rant quality. ... 's question about Andy LaRoche.  Yes, I think he's the real deal.  He's only played three games, but he looks confident out there.  Granted, it could just be the adrenaline of being called up to the big leagues, but he's from a baseball family, so it's not like he hasn't seen it before.  We see guys come up, do well, and then really struggle (ahem, Wilson Betemit), but then we also see the Jeff Francoeurs and Robinson Canos of the game.  But, if you believe this column, you might want to stick with Zimmerman.
