Tiger Woods: First $100 Million Man in Sports History
Published 5/31/2007 by Michael David Smith at FanHouse
... Sports Illustrated is out with its annual Fortunate 50 list of the highest-earning athletes in the world, and it's no surprise that Tiger Woods is No. 1. But the dollar figure is staggering: His ridiculous endorsement earnings makes him "sports' first $100 million man" even without his relatively puny $12 million in winnings. Another surprise: Phil Mickelson is third, with $47 million in endorsements in addition to $4.3 million in winnings. (Oscar De La Hoya is second with $53 million in winnings and $2 million in endorsements.) Michelle Wie is the only female on the list, with less than $1 million in winnings but nearly $20 million in endorsements. With today's endorsement contracts, it's a very good time to be a world-famous golfer. (Photo credit: Getty Images)

Why Don't Boxers Make Major Endorsement Money?
Published 6/5/2007 by Michael David Smith at FanHouse
... Oscar De La Hoya made $53 million for his fight against Floyd Mayweather , more than any other athlete in the world will make this year -- at least in terms of money earned in salary and winnings. But in terms of endorsements, De La Hoya falls far short -- he earns just $2 million annually, a figure dwarfed by dozens of baseball, football and basketball players. Why do boxers make so much more money in the ring than they do from commercials? Why does corporate America not consider De La Hoya worthy of its millions, while paying a small fortune to put Peyton Manning in Visa commercials and Tiger Woods in Nike commercials? You could argue that it's because boxing is a violent sport, and companies don't want to be associated with violence. You could also argue that it's because many of America's most famous boxers (Mike Tyson foremost among them) engage in behavior outside the ring that makes corporate sponsors

... Things like this simply do NOT happen in the NFL, huge contracts for football players are the exception, not the rule. I remember looking over a list of the 50 highest paid athletes a few months ago, and there were no more than 5 NFL players included.
