Oregon Fans Threatened to Kill Kevin Love, Called His Mom, Grandma, Sister 'Whores'
Published 2/27/2008 by Michael David Smith at FanHouse
... But the account by Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated of the abuse Love and his family took before and during the game is chilling. According to Wahl, Love canceled his cell phone because Oregon fans who got his number left death threats on his voice mail. And during the game, Oregon fans hurled insults at Love's family, including calling his mom, grandmother and 13-year-old sister "whores." ...
Student Fans Acting Badly
Published 2/28/2008 by Howard Wasserman at Sports Law Blog
Grant Wahl at si.com decries this basketball season as the "ugliest in years" and calls on schools and conferences to take some action to get fans and fan speech under control. I have written enough about fan speech in this and other spaces that my views are pretty obvious. Jump over and read the piece to get a sense of the laundry list of incidents. ...

NCAA Student Fans Enjoy Hoops, Death Threats
Published 2/28/2008 at The Sporting Blog
By Spencer Hall And I thought the West Coast was supposed to be the mellower coast. Kevin Love certainly can't think that anymore after his cell phone number landed in the hands of Oregon fans in January . Grant Wahl wrote: Love quickly cut off his cellphone service and wisely had the number changed. Wahl wonders out loud in the article if "college fans have gone too far," but this seems like your standard "kids these days" argument. (Grant Wahl says, "his lawn, you needs to get off it.") For anyone who remembers Vandy fans taunting Dwayne Schintzius by throwing tennis balls ...
Don’t Even Think Of Making KevLuv’s Granny Cry

SPORTS ILLUSTRATED has a feature exploring what appears to be a trend of worsening taunts by college basketball fans this season. As part of the piece, SI unleashes an unnerving story about some of the conditions the family of UCLA’s Kevin Love endured prior to and during the Jan. 23 contest at Oregon. Stan Love knew it would be bad. But not this bad. Stan, who is Kevin’s father and the sixth-leading scorer in Oregon’s history, arrived at his alma mater that night in a party of seven including Karen, Kevin’s 13-year-old sister, his grandmother and his uncle Mike , a ...
Arizona Fans Are Sore Losers
Published 2/29/2008 by Chris at Intentional Foul
... Actually, this behavior simply mimics what’s becoming an epidemic in college athletics. The set-up: Arizona fans were mad they were getting housed by USC and when Davon James punctuated USC’s dominance with an emphatic dunk, complete with him pointing to the Wildcats crowd, a `Zona fan decided they’d pay him back. With a bottle of water: ...

... There’s your respect right there. Not enough space, fellas. Sorry. Oh, and Kevin, next time those Oregonians give you hard time, just shoot some Birkenstocks filled with vegan sandwiches out of a t-shirt cannon into the student section…If you thought that was judgmental and/or rude, read Grant Wahl’s story on taunting in college basketball from this past week’s SI to get some real perspective. ...
On the Cameron Crazies

I happily will be out at loud drinking establishments tonight, which will spare me the ESPN fawning over the antics of certain Jersey students. Who, it must always be remembered, are perfect saints, unlike those other schools who say mean things and try to get on TV. There's already an interent's worth of commentary on who's going to win the game (UNC) and the repercussions therein (UNC will continue to be all that is right with the world, Duke will continue to be hell) so I'm just going to repost my little bit of Cameron Crazy writing ...
How Far Is Too Far?
Published 3/9/2008 by Dennis at Pitt Blather -- The Rantings Continue
“…he sucks too.” Chances are you’ve heard that if you’ve been to a Pitt home basketball game in the last few years. If not, let me explain: after each visiting player is introduced, the students yell “sucks!” and after the opposing head coach is announced they yell “he sucks too!” All while holding up a special Zoo newspaper in front of their faces. Why bring this up? I got to thinking about it after reading “ Over The Top ” by Grant Wahl in Sports Illustrated. Basically it explains that excessive vulgarity and taunting by fans (mostly students) is getting out of control to the ...
