Kelly Dwyer: Ranking the NBA's 30 personnel bosses
Pluses: On the surface, Buford's accomplishments appear to be mitigated by the presence of David Robinson (drafted in 1987) and Tim Duncan ('97), and the stern influence of Gregg Popovich calling the shots from the bench while wielding a heavy hand in the front office. Even while taking all of this into account, it has become clear that Buford has had the strongest influence in creating the ... [link]

Kevin Pritchard: Ninth in SI, first in our hearts
Published 6/26/2007 by Casey Holdahl at Blazers Blog - OregonLive.com
Thanks to "bingobango27" in the forum for posting this link grading the general managers of the NBA . Kevin Pritchard, just a few months into his tenure as GM, is ranked ninth by Kelly Dwyer: Pluses: Pritchard understands that young, malleable talent is at a premium, and he isn't afraid to deal for it. He also understands that with every domestic or international prospect being scouted to the hilt, a GM cannot be close-minded or intractable, and that conventional scouting wisdom isn't nearly enough to pinpoint the best personnel. Pritchard doesn't appear to be the type to leave any stone unturned. Minuses: We're still trying to figure out just how large a role he had in Portland's post-Bob Whitsitt mistakes: handing big contracts to Darius Miles, Theo Ratliff and Zach Randolph; trading down to draft Martell Webster over Chris Paul; and taking Sebastian Telfair way too high in 2004. Most ...

... Damaging news to the league's top GM, Bryan Colangelo (this list is solid, but I've still got Colangelo at the top). I've been scouring the free agent lists floating about the net and there really isn't a glue guy to be found. Chris Webber? You know I like him, but I wouldn't put C-Webb in the Grant Hill glue category. Jerry Stackhouse? He's going to want minutes and shots, and might not be worth the headache. ...

... What was Kelly Dwyer thinking when he ranked Bryan Colangelo fourth on his ranking of the top personnel bosses? While the Mavericks and Pistons had better records than Toronto when you look at the moves BC has made he hasn’t had the same draft blunders that Dumars has (Darko) and he’s revived two franchise (Phoenix and Toronto) while Donnie Nelson took over an already strong Mavericks franchise. C’mon Kelly, time to give the reigning executive of the year some more respect! ...

... Second, this is Ernie Grunfeld we're talking about.  The man knows how to build good teams.  He took the Knicks to the NBA Finals, and if it weren't for Michael Jordan, they could easily have won it all.  He took Milwaukee to one game from the NBA Finals, even though they had no good big men and lacked depth beyond their Big 3.  With all due respect to blog friend Kelly Dwyer (easily the best writer at SI), he's better than the 11th best GM in the league.  I'd place him behind only R.C. Buford, Donnie Nelson, Bryan Colangelo, John Paxson, Kevin O'Connell, and maybe Kevin Pritchard and Sam Presti.  There are few GMs in this league that I'd trust to figure something out more than Ernie Grunfeld. ...

... a year (according to ESPN.com), Jason Kapono to Toronto for $5.36 million, Steve Francis getting paid not to play for $30 million, and the mother of them all: 6 years and $115 million to Rashard Lewis. I was actually in a bar with coworkers when I saw that last one, and if I hadn t been drunk already, I would ve sworn I was drunk. But enough about the others, here s to us! We ve got a great nucleus of stars at every position: Felton, Wallace, Richardson, Okafor, Bre well, four-outta-five ain t bad. We ve also got some bright electrons with Carroll, Herrmann, and Morrison (I still haven t given up). And if we can re-sign Jake Voskuhl, he can lend some stability; he s like the noble gas of the group. We also should have approximately $8-9 million remaining in cap space to get a competent backup point guard, so let s say a little prayer for MJ to make something happen. And on that note, I d like to thank CNNSI.com s Kelly Dwyer, who actually had poor MJ ranked second-to-last in ...

The first cracks in the Lakers' dynasty appeared when Shaq elected to have his 2002 toe surgery "on company time." That delay probably cost the Lakers' home court advantage against the Spurs, who beat them en route to their second title, and set in motion the series of events that culminated in Shaq being traded to Miami. Yes, Shaq won a ring in Miami but Duncan has won two since the Shaq trade.
