Mets can't top Rollins in war of words
Over the Lidge? New Phillies closer Brad Lidge said he was looking forward to this year after a situation he said grew "stale'' in Houston. That's a nice way to say crummy. Lidge looked a great pickup for Philly, and he still may be. However, reinjuring his knee while throwing his first pitch in camp is a significant downer for the Phillies after the key winter move was to acquire him, which ... [link]

Mets Shopped El-Duque?
Published 2/25/2008 by Old Navy King at MLB Fleece Factor
... According to Jon Heyman at SI.com, the Mets had shopped Orlando Hernandez this winter, with the idea of signing free-agent Kyle Lohse if there were any takers. Apparently, there wasn’t much interest in El-Duque. Teams probably think the right-hander is much older than his listed 41 years of age.  ...

Mets Dangled El Duque
Published 2/25/2008 by Tim Dierkes at MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com
... According to SI.com's Jon Heyman: The Mets quietly sought trade offers for Orlando Hernandez late this winter, with the idea that if anyone bit, they would sign Kyle Lohse. But apparently there were no takers. Swapping El Duque's 140-150 innings for Lohse's 190 might add a few wins, given the replacement level pitchers the Mets went to in '07.   Hernandez at $6.5MM isn't  terribly appealing though.  The Mets could probably get Lohse for a similar amount on a one-year deal.  Maybe they still ...

Sosa Looks for Work, Piazza to Retire?
Published 2/25/2008 by Mr. Fleece at MLB Fleece Factor
... According to Sports Illustrated, free agent outfielder Sammy Sosa is looking for a team that will give him 450 at-bats in 2008.  His agent, Adam Katz, says Sosa is looking “for the right job, not just any job”. Sosa apparently has some offers for part-time work, but is holding out for a full-time job. In 114 games for Texas last season, Sosa had 21 HR and 92 RBI while hitting .252 (his OBP was just .311). I don’t blame teams for wanting Sosa to take on a part-time role, as last year’s output could have been a mirage. Off the bench, he could provide ...

How Hard Is It To Say Goodbye to El Duque?
Published 2/26/2008 by Matthew Artus at NJ.com: Always Amazin'
We apparently came a lot closer in the offseason to not having Orlando Hernandez to kick around anymore , writes Jon Heyman at SI.com. Heyman writes: The Mets quietly sought trade offers for Orlando Hernandez late this winter, with the idea that if anyone bit, they would sign Lohse. But apparently there were no takers. What could have been... It certainly appears to resolve a lot of Mets pitching issues. They clear El Duque's fragility from the roster and upgrade with a workhorse like Lohse, who presumably gets at least a 2-year deal. Lohse gets the #5 spot in the rotation, ...

Mets' El Duque was available this winter
Published 2/26/2008 by Eddie D'Anna at SILive: Ya Gotta Believe
Was surprised to read a report in SI.com that the Mets were shopping El Duque this winter. Word has it GM Omar Minaya would have inked Kyle Lohse had he found a taker for Orlando Hernandez, who really looks like he's showing some physical cracks at an age that could be as high as 44. El Duque can still pitch... when he's not suffering from arthritis of the neck, short toes, a tooth ache or bejesus knows what other ailments are brewing this season. But the Mets tried twice to have him on the mound when the games counted and failed each time. Looks like they were ready ...

No, I Haven't Abandoned Ship

No, I'm not out for two weeks with a strained elbow. No, I'm not hurting from head to toe. No, I'm not searching for the magic scripture that will cement my status as "the blogger to beat". Because how can I be the blogger to beat when the very thought of getting on an airplane occupies my mind to the point where I can't even center a post around a simple "Orlando Hernandez is old" joke. Right now, I'm the blogging equivalent of Rob Deer ... I can't seem to be able to put the bat on the ball. All because I've gotta ride on an ...

Duaner Sanchez pitched in a game for the first time since July 2006, when his right shoulder was separated in a taxi accident in Florida. He gave up two hits and walked a batter, striking out one in a scoreless inning.
Notes: Sanchez takes first step
He may have felt like he "pitched 15 innings" on Monday, but Duaner Sanchez's outing in a Mets intrasquad game consisted of only 26 pitches. Still, it was the first workout even resembling a game situation for the righty since 2006, and that alone ...
